needed to (yeah, for a couple of lines, I needed to) and slowly, little by little, the nervousness started to leak away. Sure, there was always that little niggling bit of terror still making my leg muscles quiver every few seconds, but I was getting more comfortable and more confident. Hell, I may have even overdid it a little during my whole ‘going nuts’ part of the scene. I don’t know why. I was nowhere near what I had done during rehearsal but, at that moment, it just seemed natural. I was even feeling a little giddy, to be honest. Not exactly in-line with the sudden drunken madness that made Leontes suddenly believe his wife was sleeping with his best friend just because she convinced him to stay longer but…hey, you play with what you got. When the scene ended, I only had time to catch a quick smooch and an, “Awesome job!” from Kayla before I had to turn right back around and get ready to go back on. Now that my nervousness was settling out, I was able to appreciate everyone’s acting more. Sure, looking back, we were very obviously high school students trying to make sense of stuff we didn’t quite understand, but hey, we were having a good time. Jessica leaned against the wall next to me, catching her breath as well. “You’re doing great,” she whispered. “Thanks,” I replied, looking onto the stage where Kayla was making her entrance. We trudged through the next few scenes, each moment on stage both the most exhilarating and the most terrifying experience I could imagine in the theater business, until we finally closed the curtain on the first half of the show. Everyone was sweating, panting, exhausted, but in high spirits. Halfway through and no major screw-ups. A flubbed line here, a delayed cue there, but nothing major. At least…it wasn’t major until an irate Ms. Locke came into the Black Box. “The line is ‘for precedence’, Sarah, not ‘for presence’!” she shouted at one of the actresses. Then she rounded on the group of actors playing background attendants. “You were all off-place! I could barely see you for all of Scene Three!” I glanced at Kayla and flapped my hand open and shut. She giggled. “And don’t even think of laughing, Ms. Hannigan!” Ms. Locke snapped, turning her blazing gaze on her, “Your first scene completely lacked any—” “Hey, Ms. Locke?” I cut in, peeved, “How about we save this until after the show? No point in ...
