she said, poking me on the nose, “What’s wrong?” “Just jitters, I guess. How do you not have them?” “You kidding?” she said churlishly, rolling her eyes, “Look at my hands.” I did; they were quivering like aspen leaves. “But you said you were excited.” “Yeah…I can still be pissing-my-pants terrified at the same time. This is…” She swallowed. “My first time being a lead, you know?” “I know how you feel.” At least I wasn’t alone. Jessica didn’t have that problem. She had been, and would continue to be, the big headliner for the school plays and probably was more awkward and uncomfortable off -stage rather than on it. I really should try to be nicer to her. She’d been nothing but pleasant to us since the whole Brad thing. “You’re gonna do great,” Kayla said, putting a hand on my cheek, “You’re amazing! You don’t even know how good you’ve been during rehearsals.” I shrugged. “I’m okay.” “If we weren’t in costume, I’d dig my finger into your side,” she threatened, “Remind me to do that later.” “No promises.” She stuck out her tongue. “Seriously, Jack, you’re gonna be great. Everyone knows you’re fantastic.” “Thanks sweetie,” I said, pushing a lock of hair out of her face, “Would a kiss mess up your lipstick?” She grinned broadly. “I don’t care. Get over here.” I leaned in and kissed her passionately. Her hands gripped my biceps as she leaned as hard into the kiss as she dared; we both had our stage makeup on and the last thing we needed was Ms. Locke jumping up our asses because ...
of makeup streaks. We broke apart to the sound of wolf whistles from the few cast members who were circling through the hallway. Among them was Jessica. “Trying to take my husband?” she teased Kayla. A few weeks ago, Kayla would have had something extra catty to say. As it was, her only response was, “You really don’t think the king is porking any piece of ass he can get his hands on?” She stuck out her well-padded rear. “This as has been porked more than a Louisiana barbeque.” Jessica laughed. “Warm-ups are about to start.” I groaned inwardly. Yes, warm-ups are important. But, let me ask you all this: what should we warm up if we’re already in sweltering, heavy costumes? Seems like a good God damn way to get a cramp. Shouldn’t we warm up before climbing into our woesome wardrobe? Not according to Ms. Locke. Ugh. Warm-ups were just your usual practice of getting in a circle and going through some basic calisthenics and voice work. You know, ‘red leather, yellow leather’ and ‘unique New York’ and stuff like that. My personal favorite was ‘What a To-do’, one I doubt most of you have ever heard of. Let me run through it real quick for you: Oh, what a to-do to die today at a minute or two till two A thing distinctly hard to say, yet harder still to do For they’ll beat a tattoo at twenty till two With a rat-ta-ta-ta-ta-ta-ta-ta tattoo And the dragon will come when he hears the drum At a minute or two till two today at a minute or two till two Oh, and you need to enunciate every ...
