the worst production I was in. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Two eternal days later, school finally let out for the Thanksgiving holiday. Backpacks were kicked into the corners of our rooms, forgotten in a second, and video game controllers were immediately picked up. Mom and dad made a token effort to suggest we get some homework done over the break, a suggestion that died almost as soon as it was made. They wouldn’t have had time to check up on us anyway to make sure we were mining the ‘fascinating’ depths of mathematics and biology. We were having the Hannigans over for Thanksgiving dinner and mom had been preparing for almost a week to get everything ready. It took her a whole day to come up with the menu, a task which apparently required her to follow us around, rattling off suggestions while we said, “Uh huh…sure…sounds good…yep…uh huh…” just so she would go bug someone else. I don’t even know why she was being so obsessive about the menu. We all knew she was just going to make everything anyway. Dad had a talk with her about this, reasoning that if she made everything she could think of, the Hannigans might feel a little left out since they wouldn’t have anything to bring. The kitchen became an off-limits zone whenever she was home and even when she wasn’t, the counters were so crammed with half-finished platters of food and various ingredients that trying to find a place to put a cereal bowl became an adventure in itself. Even the breakfast table in the kitchen became a place for mom to put finished platters, wrapped in aluminum foil to keep them fresh until they were ready for cooking. “Hey, mom?” I asked once, watching her zip this way and that like a bee in a hive, “Do you need a hand?” Kayla was out shopping with her parents and I was bored out of my mind. “No thanks, honey,” she replied without breaking stride, “Got it.” “You sure? I mean, I’ll even do dishes.” Yeah, that’s how bored I was. I was offering to do dishes. “I got it, Jack. Go hang out with Kayla or something.” “She’s gone out with her parents.” “Then hang out with the twins.” Yeah…the twins were being daring and having a little ‘quality time’ with mom and dad in the house. I think they knew but, to their credit, they weren’t saying anything. “They’re hanging out with each other.” “Then,” she said brusquely, stopping for a second to give me a hard stare, “Find something else to do because right now, I need to concentrate.” I threw up my hands and left. I know what you’re thinking: why am I not just playing video games? Well, to be honest, I was kinda played out at the moment. I mean, I love Skyrim to ...
