think so. TW: You don’t sound sure. SR: Umm? It’s not the sort of thing you’d forget, right? And I’m quite sure I haven’t, but somehow it feels like I know what I’m missing. Like I know what it should feel like. Is that weird? TW: Everything to do with the human brain is at least a little bit weird. That one no more than most. SR: Do you think it’s important? TW: Whether or not you’ve ever experienced an orgasm? No. But whether or not you experience them regularly? Yes, it’s important. I’m not saying it’s the cause of your anxiety – that would be taking it a bit far – but sexuality is a very important part of what it means to be you; and when your sexuality is compromised then the impacts could be unpredictable. SR: Please tell me you’re not writing out a referral to a gigolo. TW: (laughs) No! Oh my goodness, I wish I could! I’d self-prescribe myself to an early grave. No, I think there are other things to try before calling in the big guns. SR: Like masturbation? I don’t think that’s going to work. I think the inclination has to be there first. TW: Actually, I agree. No, there’s something else I want you to try; something that might help address the inclination issue. Have you ever read any erotica? SR: What, like Barbara Cartland? Steamy romances and bodice rippers? TW: Kind of. But knock it up a notch. Short stories with a simple plot and a lot of graphic sex. SR: Um, sure. I guess I’ve seen that kind of thing, but not a lot of it. TW: Have you ever tried writing a ... sexy story? SR: Never. Have you? (laughs) TW: Well I’m going to give you some homework. I want you to write a short story, a fantasy. Just make up some sexy characters and then let them do whatever they want to do. Don’t let them be constrained by relationships or societal norms or the risk of pregnancy or disease. Just let it flow without thinking about it too much. SR: What do you think that will do? TW: What I hope it will do is allow your subconscious to let you know what it finds sexy. By making it about characters on the page, I want you to be able to disassociate with them, and since it’s about them and not about you, you might be able to break through whatever is blocking your fantasies. SR: What if I don’t have any fantasies? TW: Then we’ll deal with that. But can you try this first? SR: Hmm. I suppose. Do you want to read it? TW: Not if you don’t want me to. I think it’s a good exercise just on its own, but I also think it might be instructive if you let me read it. And on that note, Susan, our time is up … (EDIT: Playback terminated. From here we just closed up the session and made a new appointment. TW) ~~~ I would like to have had more time to pursue this thread, but I suppose it can wait until next week. A woman who does not experience orgasms isn’t all that noteworthy, but one who has no sexual fantasies is curious indeed. I think it is very worthy of further exploration. Of course it may turn out not to be the case; she may well harbor fantasies and she’s just ...
