You're the man for the job." My heart sinks. Caden and Carson leaves the room and my mother escorts Tommy away. Then my Dad hands me a knife and the rabbits. "Wrestling?" "It was innocent, Dad." "Innocent? I believe you. Your uncle and I wrestled all the time. Come on, bud," he says and swings open the door. - Caden Ray Smith - "You can't just say whatever the hell you want whenever you want to, Carson!" I'm white-knuckling it down the highway and am about to make my turn off to our house. Dad's already been called by Nyx's father, and I know that because he's already called me. What I say in my bedroom is none of anybody's business, and even though he meant nothing by it because he's only a kid I am FUCKING pissed off at him. "You don't realize what you have potentially done. You have, quite possibly, ruined everything." "I'm sorry," he cries and hides his face in his hands. "Please don't be mad at me." "I'm not mad," I say to him and I feel the relief wash over him. And for a moment i want to forgive him for everything. He's innocent in this. He doesn't know what's really going on. He doesn't know that Nicolas is gay and that I am bisexual and that he and I have been in a committed relationship. I thought it was late enough last night when he and I fooled around, and I thought we were quiet enough not to be heard. Never again when the family is home, lesson learned. And just when I feel my heart melting for my little brother I suddenly snap at him. "Not mad at all, but ...
fucking pissed off. Tell that one to Mom and Dad." I park Dad's truck and Carson storms out, slams the door, hits the house running. I've went to far, and I slink down in the seat and wait for the storm that is my parents. But it doesn't come. So I dial Nicolas's number and he doesn't answer. Shit, I think to myself. Time to face the wrath brewing inside, probably so thick they wouldn't have made it out the door to tell me if they tried. That's why they haven't come yet. I get to walk into the trap. And I deserve it. I wait a few minutes before I head inside. Then when I do I square my shoulders, brace myself for the yelling and finger pointing and the "You cannot see Nicolas right now. No longer welcome." But all I get is a, "Sit down, Caden." So I do. Dad is the first to speak. "Disappointed in you, Caden. You and Nyx have been raised better. You shouldn't talk like that." "Yes, sir," I say and hang my head. "I'm sorry." "You should be apologizing to your brother," Mom adds and stands to her feet. "That sort of language is not allowed in this house and shouldn't be said loud enough for anyone to hear. Regardless if you were playing video games or wrestling." She looks at me with dark eyes. Points to the stairs. "Now." "That's all I'm getting?" I ask. "Want more?" Dad asks. "Because I call pull off my belt, no problem there. But I thought maybe since that's frowned upon I'd go easy but if you insist." "Kyle," my mother laughs his name. "The least you could do is not smile." "Why ...
