Carson. "Would you like to tell Sandra what you said out there? I couldn't believe it." "What did you say?" my mother asks. Carson stomps his foot. "I didn't mean to! I swear to God I didn't!” "Do NOT use His name in vain," my father's voice thunders from the door. He walks in the room wearing a thick forest printed suit and a few rabbits slung on a rope. He lies them down in an oversized sink at the back of the kitchen and pulls off a hat. He wrings water out in the sink and looks at Carson out of the corner of his eye. He'll act tough but he has an incredibly soft heart for that boy. "Now what did you not mean to do?" Caden doesn't say anything, he drops the subject. He doesn't like my father any more than I do. "Caden," my father says gently. "What happened?" "We let the kids shoot paintballs." The man laughs and walks over to us. "I see. And who didn't you mean to hit?" He stops, looks at me with half of the paint still stuck to my jaw mixed with peeling blood. His laugh bellows like a tsunami at me and I draw back. His breath reeks of stale beer. "You're fussing over this, Sandra? For Christ's sake let the boy wash in the bathroom. He's not a child." "Thank you, Dad," I say even though I know it's meant to add insult to injury. I hop off the table. "I'll just go." "That's not what Carson did," Tommy suddenly adds. He crosses his arms over his chest and glowers at the other boy. "I hit Nyx. Carson said the B word!" "Carson," both my parents snarl at him. "I handled ...
it," Caden cuts in. "We're going home to speak with Dad. He'll be in big trouble." Suddenly, Carson screams. "THAT'S NOTHING LIKE WHAT YOU AND NYX WAS SAYING LAST NIGHT!" "No? What did they say?" Carson shies away. "They kept yelling at each other. They kept saying the F word!" "CADEN!" "NICOLAS JAMES," my mother screams. "What the hell were you two doing," my father demands we tell. Caden and I look at each other. Can't deny. Definitely can't tell the truth. Good ole Dad will kill me. So I say, "Playing war games," at the exact time Caden swears, "We were wrestling!" "I think they were wrestling," Carson adds and suddenly Caden's to his feet. "We're leaving," he says and grabs Carson by the hand. My mother paces the room and takes hold of Caden's shoulder. I see them hold their gaze, then Caden looks at me in the quickest glance and nods his head ever so slightly. And I swear to God that if they said to each other what I think they have in their momentary glare I'll kill Caden. "It's best you take Carson home," my mother says quietly. My father agrees. "I'll be calling your father, boys. Something's going down and I don't like it." No kidding, I think to myself. You never do. I start for the door when my mother calls my name. "Nicolas, honey." "I'm just going to go over for a little while. I'll be back by dinner." I'm almost to the door when my father catches me. "No," he says with a sharp edge to his voice, the edge meant to kill. "I need help cleaning these damned rabbits. ...
