    - Nicolas James Earnhart - We've been running for the last ten minutes, and when we finally skid to a close we find ourselves tumbling against the ground, green streaks staining our clothes. We can hear them somewhere close behind us. They scream at the top of their lungs, shake their weapons in the air. One of then declares that we will die. "Die?" I whisper to the boy next to me, his face rubbed a mess by thick lines of dirt and mud. He looks at me with wide eyes, "We haven't done anything to deserve this.” A crunch of leaves trumpet nearby and we bunker down beneath the foliage, only the disguise on our heads of leaves and twigs poking up over the log behind us. I squint my eyes, catch my breath. "Calm down, boy..." BANG! The trigger pulled back, the shot fired I nearly drop my shit as it speeds past my face and explodes on a distant tree. "Not this way," a younger boy says, sounding defeated. "I don't know where they went." "They're here," a second boy says, his sly smile dancing on his lips. "I can feel it." "Where?" The crunch of leaves and broken branches is enough to send me to my feet running, but my partner places his hand on my thigh and I fall still and silent. I feel blood to my right boil and suddenly he's too his feet. "Carson...!" "CADEN," I scream, and directly in front of him my little cousin, Tommy, shoots off three paintballs. I leap through the air as two of them slams straight into Caden's shoulder, the third catches my jaw and I clamp down on my tongue and blood spills over my mouth. He and I will both bruise for sure. Luckily he can hide his, but I gotta go to the first day of school in a week with my jaw possibly black and blue and swollen. Dramatic, I know. "Over," Caden's voice booms. He's pissed, has every right to be. Carson is only seven years old. Tommy, only nine, rushes forward with tears spilling out of his eyes. "I panicked. Don't be mad at us for hitting you." Caden snatches the gun out of his little brother's hands. "To the house," he says. "Now." Game. Over. Fifteen minutes later my mother is scrubbing away at my face to check the damage. "I'm seventeen, Mom, not Tommy's age." "Hey!" Tommy yells and crosses his arms. "Speaking of Tommy's age," my mother says sternly. "What in Christ's name were you doing allowing children to play with those damned things?" "Mother," I say. "Thou shall not take the Lord's name in vain!" She smacks me lightly against the mouth and I laugh at her. "Ouch!" "You're such a child," Caden chimes at me then turns attention to ...
