We checked in Thursday afternoon and didn’t actually make it to the casino, or anywhere else for that matter until Saturday afternoon. Then we were back in our suite by eight o’clock that evening and didn’t leave it again until we checked out on Monday morning. Hey, it was our first time to make love in another state. About two weeks before Thanksgiving, Mom’s father passed away suddenly from what the doctor believed to be a stroke. He was already in the early stages of Lou Gehrig’s disease or ALS if you prefer. Anyway, Mom was absolutely heartbroken. I mean she really, really came undone. I had a little trouble understanding it because she and her father had been kind of estranged ever since we’d lived with him and that bitch he married after my grandmother had kicked us out. They very seldom saw or spoke to each other after that and in truth, they had never been particularly close to begin with. She was definitely not Daddy’s little girl. Deanna pointed out to me that that was exactly why Mom was so upset. That the death of a parent you’re estranged from or not close to is very often much harder on someone than if they’d been very close and bonded with that parent. In a word - Guilt! Needless to say, Thanksgiving really sucked in 2013. Not only because of my grandfather’s death, but also because Deanna was away on a trip. Then came Christmas! Our first Christmas together. Deanna made sure that she would be home both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day and since I worked Thanksgiving Day, I was given a choice of either having Christmas Eve or Christmas Day off, so Deanna told me to work Christmas Eve so that she and I could host a big family and friend Christmas Day at our house. I worked from eight to four-thirty on December 24 of 2013 and I pulled my once again badly suffering little VW Beetle into our driveway at around five-fifteen that evening. It was already pitch dark out and bitterly cold with temperatures in the single digits and about seven inches of snow on the ground. Deanna had gotten home late on the 22 nd and she didn’t have to leave again until the 27 th . I pulled around to the garage and pushed the button on my remote door opener to open the door to my slot. But nothing happened. Fuck! And as all three of the garage doors were closed, I had to park my car and hurry up to the sliding doors on the back porch that led into the dining cove in the kitchen. Thankfully, Deanna was sitting at the kitchen table working on her laptop as I ...
