Everything had been perfect before she’d met Heath and try as she might she couldn’t get back into that innocent mentality. Nothing had changed but she was overthinking everything, doubting Jeff, doubting herself, wondering why she was still sat next to the expressive stranger who’d hit pause on her life and made her think. Thinking was dangerous. It had ruined everything. Even if Jeff hadn’t done anything wrong, she dreaded the evening ahead. She felt guilty for even entertaining the idea that he would cheat on her. It’d never be the same. Her happy, clueless, jam-packed schedule of a life now seemed repetitive and depressing. “Why didn’t you get on the bus?” she asked finally. “Why didn’t you?” Heath countered softly. “Because I’m stupid. Because of you. You shouldn’t have talked to me. You’ve ruined everything, do you realise that?” Heath’s forehead creased into a frown. “How? I never did anything.” “You spoke,” Isla said, and there was no anger in her voice anymore, maybe just resignation. She exhaled slowly, trying to find some way to organise the conflicting thoughts in her head. Her eyes dropped to the bag at her feet and the sight of it filled her with dread. You’ve just never seen it this way before. And it’s hard to get your head around. But it’ll clear up. Things are over but they’re just beginning. It’s like starting right from the beginning again but easier because you know the mistakes you shouldn’t make.” Isla looked at him, wanting something in his expression to give, something that would tell her he was a fake, an imposter, someone who she shouldn’t listen to. But there was nothing paper about him. He was solid, real, and honest but honesty hurt when she’d been lying to herself all her life. Maybe life wasn’t about doing things the way they should be done. Maybe life was about living. Laughing when you wanted to, even if the time wasn’t right. Crying without worrying about judgement. Being the bad girl, the one who attracted disapproval but felt innately content inside. She felt almost like she was dreaming. Everything was surreal. The people, the traffic, the buildings, there was a numbness inside her that dulled everything but Heath. She thought of her dreams and how she’d worked towards nearly all of them and then she thought harder, thought about the real dreams she’d had when she was still a kid and how all the boxes next to them were unchecked. Sure, they were unrealistic and childish but wasn’t that the beauty of ...
