Everything had been perfect before she’d met Heath and try as she might she couldn’t get back into that innocent mentality. Nothing had changed but she was overthinking everything, doubting Jeff, doubting herself, wondering why she was still sat next to the expressive stranger who’d hit pause on her life and made her think. Thinking was dangerous. It had ruined everything. Even if Jeff hadn’t done anything wrong, she dreaded the evening ahead. She felt guilty for even entertaining the idea that he would cheat on her. It’d never be the same. Her happy, clueless, jam-packed schedule of a life now seemed repetitive and depressing. “Why didn’t you get on the bus?” she asked finally. “Why didn’t you?” Heath countered softly. “Because I’m stupid. Because of you. You shouldn’t have talked to me. You’ve ruined everything, do you realise that?” Heath’s forehead creased into a frown. “How? I never did anything.” “You spoke,” Isla said, and there was no anger in her voice anymore, maybe just resignation. She exhaled slowly, trying to find some way to organise the conflicting thoughts in her head. Her eyes dropped to the bag at her feet and the sight of it filled her with dread. She felt like she’d fallen out of touch with the world. She couldn’t be happy anymore, she couldn’t work hard and smile and fake her way through life, even if it didn’t feel like faking.
