first plane ticket. And then wherever you go, you get a job, waiting tables, bartending, teaching kids to swim. Save up. Stay at a hostel. Make enough for your next plane ticket. It’s so easy, Isla. You get to see the world. It’s beautiful.” He was selling a dream to her but it was still just a dream. “I don’t know any other languages,” she said uncertainly. “You don’t need to.” “I can’t,” she said again, and reality swept through her, extinguishing the fantasy. “I can’t leave Jeff. He’s the best thing that’s ever happened to me.” “You’ve never known anything else,” Heath said. “It’s going to end, Isla. Soon enough, even if he’s not messing around. The days are going to get to you, the routines, the dullness of this life. Trust me. You’ll probably stay with him even though you won’t be able to stand him. And you’ll feel bad about it. Avoid all that.” Isla swallowed hard. She thought of her apartment, of Jeff’s coffee cup, of the stack of books on her bedside table. Everything seemed so empty all of a sudden. The bus pulled up to the kerb and a flurry of people exited before the crowd started to board. Isla didn’t move and neither did Heath. She thought of Jeff and wondered if she should go. She couldn’t decide and the moment passed; the bus doors closed and her and Heath were left there alone. The sun was beginning to set, though the day still held a hot, drowsy appeal. It was the kind of night people spent drinking cold beers and watching sports. Not a night to dress up and go to the opera. She thought of Colleen again, the wild red hair and green eyes, the skirts that bordered on indecent. She’d never really given her a second thought before, but now she seemed like the most attractive woman on the planet. But Jeff wouldn’t go there. He couldn’t. And yet, she couldn’t be sure. What if she didn’t know him as well as she thought? ...
