    from the fridge. “I mean that Thanksgiving’s over a month away and Christmas is over two,” Nick replied. “And your point?” Tina asked. “What the hell are you doing?” Nick reiterated. "What's the occasion?" “Do I really need an occasion to cook dinner for my sweet boy?” Tina replied innocently. Boy, she’s really laying it on thick , Nick thought as he studied his stepmother. She must have really fucked up this time. “You know what,” Nick began with a sweet smile. “You’re right. I’ll just go wash up.” “Good,” Tina replied with a gleaming grin. “Everything should be ready by the time you’re finished.” “Great,” Nick said as he turned away. “I’m starving.” Nick went back through the dining room to the foyer. Picking up his back pack and jacket, he then headed across the living room to the hallway that led to the bedrooms and the bathroom. Stopping into his bedroom long enough to drop his back pack on his bed and to hang up his jacket, Nick then went into the bathroom directly across the hall. “Oh Tina, Tina, Tina,” Nick sighed as he flipped on the lights and stepped in front of the sink and mirror. “What have you done now, sweetheart?” Nick Garrett knew his stepmother all too well; and though she truly was a sweetheart, she was notorious for getting herself into extraordinarily complicated and troublesome situations and scenarios that required him to get her out of. Tina Garrett had an enormous heart of gold as well as a very gentle and deeply compassionate, innocent soul. ...
    However her brain didn't exactly compare in size and depth to either of the previous. Though she suffered from no mental handicaps or disabilities of any kind, Tina was nonetheless scatter-brained, immature and extremely ditzy. She also suffered from a tremendous lack of common sense. But she had been this way for as long as he'd known her and it only deepened his undying love for her. Nick had been just eight years old when he lost his natural mother, Laura Garrett, to cancer. Nick’s father, Major Dean Garrett, a career United States Marine Corps officer, was a tall, robust and extremely stern and stoic man full of integrity, courage and discipline. He was also completely emotionally inept and quite cold. That being the case, he turned his young son over to his own widowed mother upon his wife's death. For the next eight years, Nick saw very little of his father. And as his grandmother was as equally stoic, cold and full of discipline as her son, Nick, was raised to be every bit the courageous, disciplined and honorable officer that his father was. Fortunately however, Nick also had enough of his mother in him and long enough exposure to her to avoid becoming the cold, stoic and emotionally inept gentleman his father was. Then upon his grandmother’s death just after his sixteenth birthday, Nick found himself returning to live with his now forty-six year old father and his father's girlfriend: thirty-three year old Tina Litteral.
