that story you asked me to write. TW: Oh really? Good for you. And how did you feel when you were writing? SR: Better. It was fun, actually. I haven’t written fiction since high school. I think I might have gotten better at it since then. TW: I do want to talk about the writing project, but it might have to wait until next week because we should explore this episode while you’re still symptomatic. So you had no plans for Monday that might have been worrying you. What did you do on the weekend? SR: Nothing much on Saturday, just some housework. And Sunday was the kindergarten family day barbecue. TW: You volunteer on the committee at the kindergarten, don’t you? Was that stressful? SR: Not at all. I’m Secretary, so I didn’t have any responsibilities on Sunday. I just brought a salad and gossiped with the other moms. TW: And how do you feel about those sort of functions? SR: I look forward to them; and this one was fun. I met some new people. I haven’t laughed so hard since I was a teenager. TW: Ha! I think I’m going to the wrong kind of kids’ barbecue. Mine aren’t anything like that much fun. SR: Oh, this one wasn’t either. It was just one person: Anna. The first thing she said to me was to tell me to go “eff” myself. (laughs) TW: And how did that make you feel? SR: I almost wet myself laughing? (laughs) TW: You thought it was funny? SR: You had to appreciate the context. She thought I’d just propositioned her. Sexually, I mean. TW: And had you? SR: No! (laughs) That’s why ...
it was funny. She was doing a breast exam, but she was doing it all wrong and I offered to help. It just came out wrong. TW: And how did it turn out? Is it troubling you? SR: Oh, God no! We had a laugh about it. We giggled like a pair of schoolgirls, actually. TW: And you parted on good terms? SR: Uh huh. TW: Did anything else out of the ordinary happen? SR: Umm? No, I don’t think so. TW: Don’t think so? Are you sure? SR: No, nothing unusual. We just had a laugh. TW: And then you woke up the next day symptomatic. SR: Yeah. Strange, huh? (EDIT: I sensed there was more to Sunday than Susan was telling me, but at the same time I didn’t believe she was lying to me, so I felt a continued direct approach was unwarranted. TW) TW: Let’s talk about your history. You told me last week that you’ve been experiencing these episodes for a long time. SR: Uh huh. Since before I was married. It would have started at college, I suppose. TW: Do you remember the first episode? SR: Not specifically, I don’t think. TW: Did you move away from home to go to college? SR: I did. I was eighteen when I moved out. Then I lived in a sorority for a couple of years before I got a place with some friends. TW: Moving away from home can be very trying. Were you worried about it? SR: Not really, I was excited to move out. I loved college life. TW: Do you think your symptoms started about the time you began college? SR: Hmm? I don’t think so. The first time I can remember noticing that I didn’t feel right, my ...
