was so cruddy that the ferry couldn’t sail today? I guess I’ll have to catch the one in the morning.” “Cheryl,” Drew said, his voice heavy with warning. She rolled toward him, laying an arm across his chest and pulling him toward her. “I want one more night, Drew,” she whispered. “And I want to wake up here next to you in the morning, make love with you. Then I’ll go back.” “What if they check the schedule? What if they went to the boat to meet you? There are a number of things that can go wrong, baby. I don’t want you in any trouble.” “Honey,” she said, lightly touching his lips with a forefinger. “I’m already a lazy bitch in their eyes. I just missed the sailing yesterday. If the worst happens, that’s what I’ll tell them. Don’t worry. Let me handle this. And let me have one more night with you, and wake up in the morning with you in our bed; in our apartment.” “You said you wanted to issue the orders,” he chuckled. “You go jump in the shower, sweetie,” she instructed, “And I’ll go see what I can pull together for dinner.” Drew sat at his computer. Now there was a glow and confidence in her that amazed and delighted him. When he thought of her, a warm flush swept through his gut. “You got it bad, brother,” he mumbled to himself, recognizing somewhat sorrowfully that she would still never be free to be completely his. He liked her. He loved her. He loved the way she’d embraced her sexuality. The grin turned grim as he thought how her husband would react if he ever found out. His ruminations turned wistful as he considered how much more fun they would be if she was his wife, rather than Jack’s. “Don’t be a damned fool,” he grumbled to himself. In spite of all the exhilarating changes in Cheryl’s attitudes, there remained one anchor. She had made a commitment. She’d promised. She would honor that. To do otherwise would violate her core value. True, she had forsaken fidelity, and not with just him, but with Micah as well. But she would stay, because doing anything else was beyond her capability to comprehend. And yet, Drew mused to himself, she’d done other things she wouldn’t have considered. Had he found a niche, a tiny crack in her ...
