the fear easing away. It was like someone had answered an unspoken prayer and sent me a companion to diminish the anxiety that had built up inside. A moment later, the dog jumped up onto the sofa, laying its head and front paws on my lap. It was no longer trembling, as if it too had needed a companion. There was no collar, no tags to identify it. I had never seen it in the neighborhood before and I wondered how it happened to come to my door. It didn’t matter. In the morning, after Bill got home, I would concern myself with seeing to where it belonged. Someone, somewhere, had to be missing it. It was too gentle of a dog to be running wild. I placed my hand on the dog’s head, gently stroking its fur. It helped to calm my nerves until it didn’t seem that the power was out, like I had decided to use candle light instead of the light switch. Everything would be fine. I was no longer alone. I sighed with contentment while petting my little companion. Thinking that perhaps my new friend would like some water, I went to the kitchen to search for a bowl. The single candle that I brought with me didn’t permit much light, but I was able to find an old butter dish that would serve the purpose. Filled with fresh water, I placed the bowl on the floor near the hall. Turning to call the dog, I stopped in mid pivot. A man, a naked man, was curled up in a corner of the sofa. Were my eyes deceiving me? Too stunned to scream, I could only stare. The man moved, stretched, and sat up. I stayed ... where I was, my eyes searching the room for the dog. The man just had to be a figment of my weirded out imagination. He wasn’t real. How could he be? How insane for me to let my eyes fool me this way! But where did that little dog go? “Here puppy … here puppy,” I called for the dog. The man sitting on the sofa leaned forward, his elbows on his knees staring at me. “I’m here,” he said. Not only was I imagining a naked man sitting on my couch, but I was hearing him speaking too! His voice was deep and rich, and even in those two words, there was a tone of sensuality that sent a shiver along my spine. I didn’t know what to think! He sat back, his hands folded in his lap. Even in the subdued light of the candle I could see his shaggy shoulder length hair was the same color of the dog’s fur. My guess was that his eyes were the same piercing green. Not wanting to undertake the impossibility that this man had been a dog only minutes ago, I didn’t want to hang around to find out. Without a second thought, I ran to the back door. I struggled with panic to disengage the lock, then it was open and I rushed out into the thick fog of the night and found my way to the backyard gate. Pulling open the gate, my intent was on getting past my car since I didn’t have my keys on me and finding my way across the street to my neighbor’s house. The fog was so thick I wasn’t even sure if I was heading in the right direction. Hands grasping my waist stopped me before I got a few feet beyond the gate. ...
