everywhere. I closed the front door and locked it. Taking one of the tall tapered candles, I went to the kitchen and checked to see if the back door was locked. The last thing I needed was my imagination conjuring up some psycho serial killer on the loose in my back yard. I was pacing again. I couldn’t stop pacing! Normally not a paranoid person, I chastised myself mentally for falling prey to my imagination. There was nothing sinister. To reason to be afraid. It was just a power outage. It was just fog, and nothing more. Then suddenly, I heard a scratching at the front door. Habit made me stop to listen. Fear stole my breath. I could hear that scratching again and the whimper that followed came from my gaping lips. I could almost hear Bill’s voice telling me to step away from the door and lock myself in our bedroom. Yet, what if someone needed my help? Standing and listening, I only heard silence. Letting out a breath I hadn’t been aware of holding in, I grabbed a kitchen knife and set the candle on the table next to the front door. Needing to rid the fear I let seep into my soul, I held the knife in the ready position and slowly opened the door. Only the fog greeted me, now so dense that I could have cut it with the knife I held in my white-knuckled hand. As I began to close the door a shadowy figure appeared, only steps away. Small. The dog was shivering, almost to the point of seizure. When I touched its head it laid down, softly whimpering. “You poor thing,” I said, keeping my voice soft not to scare the dog. “Come here. No need for both of us to be scared little rabbits.” I slowly stood up, stepping back a bit, coaxing the small animal inside. The small dog seemed hesitant at first, but then burst through the open doorway as if something unseen had frightened him. Unwittingly taking my cure from the animal, I slammed the door shut, locking both locks. I stood there for a moment with my hands against the door, my heart pounding, my pulse racing. “Well,” I said to the dog while hoping to calm my sudden burst of nerves, “You sure did pick the wrong house if you’re looking for someone brave.” The dog looked at me and tilted its head like it was trying to understand what I was saying. Sitting down on the sofa, I patted my knee in an attempt to get the animal to come to me. In the dim light of the candles, I watched as the dog looked around, sniffing its new surroundings before coming to me. “You are the strangest looking puppy I’ve ever seen,” I said to the animal. “Look at those little ears! And your eyes… wow. Are they…green? What are you anyway? A cross between a terrier and a … I don’t know what. You sure are a cute little fella though.” Petting the dog soothed me. I could feel ...
