Day two dawned. Winter sunlight came through the bare, dirty windows. The space beside me was occupied for the first time in ages. I could have sat there and watched Alessandra sleep for hours but whatever woke me must have woken her too, for half a minute later she stirred and her eyes flicked open. She looked lost for a millisecond and then everything apparently came back to her and she sighed. “God, this place looks worse in the daylight.” “Is that your opening line?” I asked. “I expected, ‘ I can’t believe I did this! I need to get out of here !’” She shook her head at me and sat up, the sheet falling down to her waist. Our eyes met, acknowledging the embarrassment of the moment and we shared a cautious smile. She broke the look and yawned. “What time is it anyway?” I looked at the clock on the bedside table. “Just past eight. Why? You got somewhere to be?” “Ballet. You got a shower I can use?” She gave me a hopeful look, a look I already knew I’d never be able to say no to. “Through there.” I pointed it out and threw on a vest and some boxers before heading to the kitchen. I didn’t quite know how to feel. Things weren’t exactly perfect but I could hardly expect her to fall in love with me over one night. But we’d had sex, and that at least was a comfort. I’d achieved more than I’d expected. I knew she wasn’t crazy about Daniel which was a definite relief. But beyond that, I was lost. I didn’t really have anything to compare to. I’d never had a girlfriend. Usually after sex, I was more eager for separation than whoever I woke up next to but this was different. This was foreign territory and I didn’t know how to deal with it. Alessandra walked into the kitchen in last night’s dress. “That was quick,” I said, surprised. She smiled. “Yeah. I’ve got used to getting ready in a rush.” “Do you want something to eat?” I asked. “I’ve gotta go,” she said reluctantly. “I’m already late.” “If you’re already late, then what does it matter? She hesitated. “What is that… porridge?” “Mm-hm. You can sit…” I glanced around. There were no chairs. She jumped up onto the countertop gracefully. “Porridge isn’t meant to smell so good.” She leaned over, curious to see what I was doing. “What did you do to it?” “It’s a secret.” There was a pause. Her eyes wandered around the kitchen taking in the battered old units, the lone calendar hanging on the wall, the wide array of cleaning products lining the windowsill. To me, it was the best room in the flat but to her it probably didn’t seem too impressive. She looked over her shoulder at the view from the window. It wasn’t pretty. Looking ...
