&#034Hey,&#034 she said. &#034I'm Heather.&#034 She came over and gave me a quick hug. &#034Marcy,&#034 I said. &#034I made stir-fry beef and veggies for dinner,&#034 Heather said. &#034Great.&#034 &#034So you're the new receptionist at Melody's.&#034 &#034Yup. But I've never been inside.&#034 They both looked at me with their eyes popped out a little. I shrugged and raised my hands up in a 'what can I tell you' gesture. &#034I peeked into the front room once, but it was empty.&#034 &#034You ever been there?&#034 I asked Heather. &#034Twice, but it's not my scene.&#034 &#034Oh.&#034 That was the only time we mentioned Melody's. Heather was studying to get her master's in library sciences. So she immediately went up about a thousand points in my book. As a book person I'm extremely fond of librarians. And as it turned out, Evan met Heather in a library. They both had read almost all of my favorite authors. When the conversation turned to TV and movies, I found out that they liked Star Wars, Star Trek, Breaking Bad, Big Bang Theory, and The Walking Dead. They were also Dallas Cowboy fans. Woo-hoo. Dinner was delicious. Afterwards we sat on their backyard porch, and Heather served brownies she made from scratch. I expected the conversation to turn to sex. It never did. At around 10:30 p.m. there was a natural lull. It seemed like I should get up and go home. &#034Thank you both,&#034 I said. &#034This was one of the best evenings I've had in a long time.&#034 &#034We'll walk you ...
home,&#034 Evan said. They did. They each gave me a peck on the cheek and that was that. Kind of anticlimactic really. I had the weekend off. Monday, right before noon, Evan came in with Jean-Luc a few seconds behind him. Jean-Luc was roughhousing with him, bumping the side of his arm into Evan's shoulder. Jean-Luc was broader, more classically handsome, dressed in more expensive clothes. Evan had more of a sweet-sensitive intelligent air about him. Evan leaned over my desk and gave me a peck on my cheek. Jean-Luc gave me a big smile. I thought it might have a little bit of a friendly leer to it, and I wondered what, if anything, Evan had told him. Swipe, swipe. Jean-Luc clapped a hand on Evan's shoulder and raised his eyebrows. Evan smiled. Evan brushed his fingers over my hand. &#034See ya on the way out, Marcy.&#034 &#034Yup.&#034 They went in. I twisted around and watched their asses as they passed through the double doors. Nice. I thought back to Zen Sushi. What was it that Evan had said? I couldn't remember. Something. I wracked my brain. 'But you get it, right?' No. I did not get it. What was I missing? Hhhhmmmn. They looked very happy and relaxed when they came out. Jean-Luc left but Evan hovered at my desk, waiting while I swiped someone in. &#034Come to our house for dinner on Wednesday?&#034 &#034Uh, okay,&#034 I said. &#034Seven?&#034 &#034Sure, I guess. See ya then.&#034 He left. I opened my book and stared at it, unseeing. What the hell was going on? What did I ...
