my roommate Stephanie’s car after work the evening of the party, Friday, March 8, 2013; all I wanted to do was get home and crawl into bed. It had been a very long day! My feet hurt, my legs ached, my back was so stiff and I had a pounding headache. Plus I was still in my pink scrubs with nothing but my raggedy old denim jacket over them. My hair hadn’t seen a brush in nearly twelve hours and was roughly yanked back into a disheveled mess of a brown ponytail. And I didn’t even want to think about what my face must have looked like. No way was I going. Fuck it! But no sooner had I made up my mind when I heard: “You still need me to drop you at your aunt’s birthday party? It’s at the Total Sports Bar and Grille, right?” Then after a few seconds of complete bewilderment at the fact that Stephanie had actually remembered, I heard something that bewildered me still more. It was my own voice this time and it said: “Yeah.” Stephanie dropped me off at 7:20pm. Ordinarily I would be driving my own car, but alas, she was in the shop. Yet another weight on my throbbing mind and aching body that night was just how the hell was I going to come up with the $600 for the repairs? I pecked Auntie Lucy on the lips and we shared a warm hug as I wished her a happy birthday then I turned and did the same to Mom minus the happy birthday. “I am so glad you were able to make it honey,” Mom told me. “Did I really have a choice?” “You’re a grown woman. Of course you did.” “Bullshit,” I said playfully. “I love you too,” Mom giggled. I set my purse down and slipped off my denim jacket then glanced around the scene. “So where is she?” “You mean Deanna?” “No, the Duchess of Cambridge! Who else would I mean?” Mom sighed as she rolled her eyes at my sarcasm and then replied “She said she’d be here sometime between seven-thirty and eight.” Mom then glanced at her watch “And it’s just now seven-thirty.” “Seven-thirty-one actually,” I teased as I waved my I-phone at her. Again, Mom scoffed at my sarcasm and then suddenly her face lit up again as she looked over my shoulder in the direction I’d entered. “There she is,” Mom announced as she smiled brightly and waved. I turned slowly around to get my first look at this woman that my mother has spoken so fondly about for so many years. And with just one glance, my life changed forever! Deanna Brady took my breath away from the very instant my eyes first fell upon her; and to this very day, she is still taking it away! I felt as though Hercules himself had just punched me in the stomach. I couldn’t breathe; I ...
