on the roof of my block of flats late in the evening and she was telling me how much she hated the way people had to complicate things. “I mean, dance is dance. We should go there and do it. Why do other people always have to get in the way? All they ever go on about is what’s going on with the roles, why they don’t get picked. If they concentrated on the present, maybe they would. You know what I mean?” “Yeah. Absolutely.” She leaned back against the railings and smiled at me. “You don’t care, do you?” “Of course I do,” I said. “I just think you shouldn’t worry about it. Laugh it off. It shouldn’t bother you. You’re meant to be relaxing.” “Funnily enough, I am. Getting all this out of my head makes me feel better.” I smiled, leaned back and closed me eyes. “Keep talking then.” She laughed, “I think I’ve finished now.” “What about today? What happened? What made you decide not to go on the tour?” Her smile disappeared, a frown settling over her features. “I just got… annoyed. We all work so hard and Vincent is just never, ever happy. I didn’t move for a second, wondering where everything was going to lead. I was scared of screwing things up. I had to think before I spoke, I had to make sure I didn’t slip up or say the wrong thing. I had to play the game perfectly. I swallowed hard and followed her inside. She was standing at the living room window. The flat didn’t look so bad anymore. Months of perseverance had made it at least vaguely habitable and I didn’t feel uncomfortable about having her there. It looked better with her there. The sensible part of my brain was telling me to take it slow and not rush things but all I could think about was losing myself in her again. I wanted to feel her body, every last inch of it. I walked over to her, eliminating the distance between us, uncertain of what to say. She remained perfectly still, even as I stood behind her, resting my hands on the windowsill either side of her and letting my body brush ...
