    short, we were both heading back into real life in the real world. We woke about eight that Sunday morning and took a shower together. So as I’m sure you can by now deduce, it was nearly one o’clock in the afternoon before we were both dressed; me in my sweat suit that I’d first put on over a week ago and Deanna in a comfy pair of jeans and a faded old University of Michigan sweatshirt. My beautiful summer dress was folded up carefully in the shopping back it came with along with my white sandals. We sat at the kitchen table and were eating the last of the homemade tamales and enchiladas. But neither of us ate much. Nor did we speak much. Finally, around two-thirty; it was time for me to head back home. The two of us agreed; or at least pretended to agree - that it would be best if we spent this last night apart. Deanna’s flight departed at nine the next morning; which meant she’d be getting up at four-thirty. And since I didn’t have to get up until around seven it would just make things easier for both of us. Plus, it would hardly be the time for a long and emotional goodbye, which we both despised. Not that you could really tell that as we stood in the frigid garage for nearly half an hour sobbing in each other’s arms as we said goodbye. Deanna had loaned me one of her winter coats as well as a pair of gloves, an adorable snow bunny hat and a scarf. No, not that one! A wooly, winter scarf.     that I bundle up for the drive home. We shared one phenomenal finale kiss of the deepest and most intimate passion. Deanna stroked my quivering cheek as we gazed deeply into each other’s teary, puffy and bloodshot eyes. She would be home next Saturday no later than noon, and she promised that she would call me every night between now and then. She needed me to understand that if we were going to build a life together as a couple then I needed to prepare myself for these long absences. It was who she was, and what she did. And I did understand. And I would endure it because she was absolutely irreplaceable to me. Almost in a joking manner, we counted down out loud from five and then tore apart from each other and did not look back. I hopped into my VW Beetle as Deanna darted back into the house, slamming the door behind her. The garage had been open and the beetle had been running for the last half hour so it was nice and warm inside and ready to roll. Though it had stopped snowing and the skies were clearing and the roads were in decent condition, it still took me over an hour to get home. It’s so hard to drive when you’re crying so piteously. And in truth, I wasn’t going home. I was leaving it. And that was confirmed the instant I walked into the house I share with Stephanie, Pam and Laura once I finally got there.
