1. New to the Neighborhood

    There I was no shit; a new college grad. But this story is not a recent occurrence;this is a story that took place a couple of decades ago. Twenty five years ago Bush Sr. was the president, midterm congressional campaign reelection where erupting and I had recently graduated college in the spring. But this story is not about who’s hot on Capitol Hill, that is for another story. I was hired in the late summer, just in time for the local Redskins to start their season. I was working at a (low even for) entry level salary, I could not afford much of a place to live that first autumn as a productive member of the employed. A male coworker needed a roommate so I jumped at the chance without even seeing his place. The apartment was the typical three story apartment architecture built in the Washington DC suburbs between the 1940s through the 1970s. The layout was four separate one or two bedroom apartments around a central outdoors stairway. The three levels are split level, the first level is a walk down, the second floor is a half flight up. I would be on the third floor with one bedroom to myself. The apartment was a pretty basic layout, a foyer that was part of a living room/dining room with a kitchen, two bedrooms and a single bathroom. I was finishing my unboxing of college kitsch at this new place having been there for less than a week. My roommate was gone, when I heard a knock on our front door.     loveliness, the stark hallway light giving this person a halo effect around their head. A disembodied voice started to ask if I had a glass of milk. Lucky for me, we had some. I invited her in and went to the refrigerator. She said her name was Jane and she lived on the second floor directly underneath me. Her light brown hair was tied up in a pony tail exposing her lightly freckled face and pale looking full lips. She was wearing a baggy sweat shirt, loose jeans, and sneakers, she was not wearing any make up and she looked about ten years older than me. I handed her the milk; she thanked me and was gone. We spoke about ten words combined and that was it. I figured I blew that chance, a perfect opportunity to sweep her off her feet in the most romantic way and create an experience tailor made for penthouse forum. I felt shattered. Up to this time I thought I was fairly smooth with girls, but apparently I am not. What a blow to my ego, here I am a horny young twenty something, completely tongue tied like a fourteen year old virgin. I did not even know what type of body she had under that sweat shirt, I could tell my roommate nothing about her body if he asked. About a week and half later I woke up on a Saturday morning, feeling homesick so I decided to make a key lime pie. I checked the refrigerator and realized I needed one more egg.
