David and Kayla were having their first real date, in a seaside restaurant. They had finished the salad and the entrée and David had to admit Kayla’s taste in food was quite good. But what about her taste in men? Kayla was so demure, so prim and proper looking, quite unlike the lady who had flirted with him on a chat site. David didn’t get many chances to call a woman’s bluff, if indeed it was. The women he knew in this neck of the woods – or any neck of the woods – almost universally saw him as a friend. Someone safe? He could live with that if it didn’t risk the friendship or risk him having to thumb a ride to the airport, or get a face and a lap full of cold water, or worse. But Kayla had a wild side, he knew from her profile. Gynecologists don’t get much better views of her anatomy than the profile pictures had shown him. David seriously doubted, however, that she followed through on a lot she said. He had to get her going, get her worked up, put some kind of spell on her so she actually believed he was a good lover. He was about a dessert course away from getting into his rental car and driving back to the airport Marriott. Alone. Wondering if he had gone too far or not far enough. “Why don’t you come with me and we can share it later?” That is, until he saw the dessert tray. You could pick a piece of any of four cakes or pies or things whipped up. Normally David was a chocolate man, but that was when he was alone. This time he saw a strawberry slice with whipped cream ... on top. He looked at it hard. He willed Kayla to take it off the tray. Actually, he sent up a little prayer as he remembered how she had handled chicken linguine earlier in the dessert. Praise be to God. She selected it. “I’ll have what she’s having,” David said, “And a whole pie for the refrigerator.” Hey, he could take it back to the room and store it in the tiny fridge and save going to the breakfast buffet tomorrow if this chance didn’t work out. He’d need it as he tried to avoid being seen in public while awaiting the flight. The waitress – a nice young lady whom David would have liked to see on the website, noted down the order and smiled. David smiled back, but shifted his eyes to Kayla to see if she would take the pie home. Surely she wouldn’t eat the whole pie – at least until he was safely back in his home far across the country. He thought he saw acceptance in her eyes. As the waitress departed, David felt what he had been hoping for all evening long, Kayla’s hand reached over and took his. He lifted her hand up and gave it a little kiss. She squeezed it a little harder. “The athlete,” David said with a smile. He returned the squeeze. “Mine is mostly from keyboarding but I can give a pretty powerful grip. I played a long time ago, didn’t get too far but I learned to enjoy typing.” “I like your slender fingers,” Kayla said, pressing against them. ”I bet they are good for a lot of things.” David smiled. He and Kayla held their hands up, palms flat against each other, ...
