the door handle and he was already inside. I could still run. Run away from everything I’d wanted. He leaned over and opened the door from the inside. I got in. The engine powered up and there was no going back. It was hot in his car. I rolled down the window, felt the warm night air rush in as he picked up speed. The roads were deserted and he drove fast. The wind whipped my hair back and took my breath away. I felt like I was drowning in the best way possible. The anxiety in my stomach was going into overload. I felt like it was my first day at school, my final exam, like I was opening the door to sombre-looking cops. The margarita in my empty stomach felt strange. It had been the hottest day of the year and the night was following through. Everything felt hot to touch and the air was muggy, full of sweat, car fumes and sunscreen. I stole a look at Robbie. He caught me and grinned. My eyes flicked to the illuminated speedometer. Seventy mph in a forty zone. The roads were quiet and smooth. I wondered if I was dreaming. Robbie shut the door. “You want a drink?” I shook my head automatically. “No, thanks.” “Right.” He grasped my wrists and pulled me to him. “So we can get down to it?” “I – I guess.” He held my hands behind my back. “What are you so scared about?” he asked, and for a second he was the Robbie I remembered but as soon as he appeared he was gone and I felt like he was a stranger again. “I don’t usually do things like this,” I said weakly. The corner of his mouth flicked up. “What, are you a third-date kind of girl?” I forced a laugh. “More like tenth. I didn’t expect this. I didn’t plan for-” “I know,” he said. “Obviously.” I stared at him, trying to find words for the thoughts in my head. “I thought you were different,” I said. “Not like this.” “I am. Usually. Only I’ve been hard for you since the day I saw you. That kind of thing makes a guy act out of character.” “So why didn’t you say?” He laughed softly. Soft and dark, like the night. “You were too sweet. Way too nice for a guy like me.” My heart thudded. “What do you mean? What’s wrong with you?” His hand slipped under my ...
