This was not the kind of weather that I liked driving through. The howling wind was making the rain blow sideways and practically blowing the trees to the ground. I had to dodge some branches that broke loose from the roadside trees while trying hard not to skid off the roadway. Frightening streaks of lightning lit up the darkened afternoon sky and loud roaring thunder frightened me just as much as it vibrated through the car. It was bad enough to have to deal with this on the main highway, but now finding myself on a two lane blacktop out in the middle of nowhere, having no idea of where I might be, was just plain insane. I had flown into New Orleans on vacation to celebrate Mardi Gras. While I was there I decided to take a ride in my rental car to explore some of the bayou. It was nice out when I started, but then the storm blew in from the ocean like a sudden hurricane. I was too far from the city to turn back, so I continued to drive in the same direction, hoping to find a diner or gas station along the way. There was literally no place to pull over without getting stuck in the mud, so I had no choice but to continue pushing forward even though the wind gusts were so strong at times I could feel the compact rental I was driving literally being lifted off the road. My heart started beating hard when my thoughts went to the worst. I couldn’t just drive around the bike and leave in good conscious without at least making an attempt to look for the rider. In my own car I carried a flashlight and a first aid kit. The car I was driving was a cheap rental without any emergency supplies. I did have my cell phone and I attempted to call 911 for help before getting out into that raging storm to look by myself, but being as far into the swamp that I was, I had no signal. I really didn’t want to test my courage. However, left with no choice but to brave the storm, I unfastened my seat belt and pulled the handle of the door. The wind caught my door, nearly ripping it from my hand and off its hinges the moment I opened it. Before I was even out of the car I was getting drenched from the downpour. I attempted to use the car to hold myself up, but the wind and the rain won out. I felt myself slip and my ass made a splash hitting the pavement. “Ouch…Dammit!” I cried out against the sound of the rolling thunder. Managing to get up again, I called out, despite the fact that my voice was lost in the roar of the ...
