“Ladies and Gentlemen, Welcome to Manchester where the local time is 15:30.” It was so great to be back. Back home. After six long months working in America, I was looking forward to having a few weeks to myself before returning to my duties in London to complete the rest of my lawyer training. The six months experience in American Law would stand me in good stead for a great job, a job that I needed so much to tackle an amazingly large student loan, just like so many other 28-year-olds. As the plane slowed to a snail’s pace and crawled slowly toward the gate, I waited patiently and day-dreamed about my own bed. There’s nothing quite like it when you’ve spent six months in a bed as hard as the floor in a nice but cramped hotel room. As we came to a standstill the clicking of all the seat belts filled the cabin, and I quickly stood up to retrieve my hand luggage from the overhead compartment. It seemed to take forever to collect my two average-sized suitcases from the carousel, but I soon had them loaded onto a trolley, and passed through customs. “Debbie! Over here!” Aunt Rosie shouted. After just an hour we pulled up on the driveway, and in the cold darkness of the December afternoon, Uncle Keith told me and Aunt Rosie to get ourselves inside, and he’d bring everything in. The warmth of the house felt so welcoming and within minutes Aunt Rosie had sat me down, and was asking me a 101 questions, while I sipped a glass of my favourite red wine. She told me that they’d planned a get-together for the following night; just a few friends and family as way of a welcome home. However, tonight was just about relaxing. She suggested a nice soak in the bath for me, while she and Uncle Keith prepared dinner. I didn’t argue, I was so physically tired, and I knew the jet lag would hit me later that night, and that I’d be wide awake by early morning! I finished my wine and followed Aunt Rosie upstairs. Uncle Keith was in my room, breathless from many trips to and from the car with my bags. It was so strange to be back in my old bedroom, filled with happy memories of solo fun. The bed was still pushed up tight against the radiator, and my old teddy bears all sat together at the end of the bed. “I’ll pop this on, shall I?” Aunt ...
