    wanted for herself. She'd also been practicing in her new heels and she decided that today was a great day for a test run on all she'd been learning. She wore a gray pencil skirt with a short slit up the side, a black cap sleeve blouse with the top two buttons undone and her heels. She decided to go without a bra or underwear. She left her hair down but added a little bit of soft curl to the hair near her face. She put on a smokey, thick eyeshadow and shiny red lipstick. Haden made a note to make sure she varied things up a bit. She wanted to find her own look, not just mimic others. Walking barefoot into the garage, she carried her heels in hand. Then she got into her car and drove barefoot to the grocery store. Once she was there, she slipped on the heels and headed in. It was just a trip to the grocery store, she told herself. But she could feel herself flushing, her heart thumping in her chest. She wasn't wearing underwear and a blast of cool air went up her skirt as she entered the store.     tried to be coy about it. Others changed direction to walk past her. One man followed her for two whole aisles, never approaching, but always hovering at a discreet distance. A woman glared at her. She was in her mid-thirties and in yoga pants. She was carrying a tiny plastic shopping basket and her eyes burrowed into Haden with something that might even be hate. But not even a minute after that, a younger girl, no more than eighteen or so, said to her, “I love those shoes! Oh my god, those are amazing. You really pull those off.” Haden blushed. “Thanks.” An older guy who worked in the produce department winked at her. Two young black guys near the sodas turned their heads simultaneously as she walked by. He heard one whisper, “Daaaayum.” It reminded her of the boys that had followed her that day in the French Quarter. Only this time, instead of fear, she felt a sense of pride and a thrill of pleasure. On the way back to her car, she had an encounter that left her rattled. She was almost to her car door when a man popped up, almost as if from nowhere.
