“I want to tell you a secret,” she whispered from the edge of the pool, pulling him in close. “If it weren’t for him, I’d be with you.” She was, of course, talking about her long time fratty boyfriend at college. He floated silently in the water, his chin resting on his crossed arms as he clung to the side, looking stoically into her eyes. She’s a liar, a damn liar and a tease. She bit her lip and smiled deviously at him, her wet t-shirt clinging to her body, outlining her perfect breasts. He was going to test her. “So you have nothing to say?” she asked playfully sitting up. “Come back down here,” he said quietly, motioning for her to come in close. She braced herself on her elbow, and leaned in as though he had a secret to whisper back into her ear. But as she waited for the secret he gently clasped her chin with one hand, and turned her head to face his, slowly leaning in so they were only centimeters from each other’s lips. He peered unflinchingly into her eyes. Neither of them gave way. He expected her to turn away but she didn’t. “If you go here, you can’t go back,” he whispered. “Who says?” she retorted mischievously. They were on leave from Afghanistan, where they piloted an Apache gunship together. “Megan says you can crash here, sis. I gotta head back to dad’s to make sure the dogs don’t destroy the place… You coming, bro?” “He’s staying here. I got him drunk on tequila,” she yelled back up. “Uh… okay,” her brother responded, a streak of hesitation and annoyance in his voice, knowing his sister well, and knowing his friend better. “I will be back early tomorrow morning… lay off the tequila alright?” he pleaded, before closing the patio door. After a minute or two, they heard his car start out front, and the sound of tires on the drive as he pulled out. She looked back down at him with that mischievous smile that he had fallen for all those years ago. “Soo…” she said slowly, more lightning shooting across the sky as thunder rumbled deeply over the house. “You ever think of me when you’re flying helicopters?” “You are such a cruel bitch, you know that?” he said smiling. She laughed loudly. “I think about you all god-damn day.” “Kiss me again.” “What about your boyfriend?” “What about him? He’s not here, and if he were… you could kick his ass,” she grinned. He grabbed her arm, and she let out a scream as he pulled her into the pool. She re-emerged coughing slightly, but as soon as she ...
