afford this restaurant is if she were selling herself?" That was enough for me. "Susan, you don't know this woman or anything about her. I can't believe you're getting so worked up over what she looks like. Why don't you lay off and try to enjoy yourself instead of ruining the evening for me and everyone else." That seemed to stop her. Of course, the damage was done, as far as I was concerned. It hurt me to hear her belittle Lucy the way she did. What made matters worse was that my superiors heard her ranting about her as well. I could only wonder what they were thinking. As far as I was concerned, the night was a total disaster. I couldn't even enjoy my meal, but I was determined not to let on that I was upset. I excused myself to go to the restroom and, on my way, made eye contact with Lucy. She hadn't noticed our party and the look of shock on her face was unmistakable. I think she was genuinely surprised and hurt to see me walk by. When I returned from the men's room she was gone. She never returned for the remainder of the night. The drive home was quiet. I had nothing to say to Susan and she could sense my darkening mood. On Sunday I drove Susan to the airport for her flight home. I asked her if she was interested in any of the homes she saw. "There were a couple that had promise but, I don't know Frank. I just don't know if this area suits me." I couldn't even reply to that. I was getting the feeling that Susan had no plans to join me. What surprised me was that I didn't really care if she did or not. I suppose I was coming to grips that my marriage had become a sham. I think I always knew this, but I didn't really take a close look until I met Lucy. She showed me that I still had a life to live and that someone could care about me and show me how much. I tried to kiss Susan before she went through the security checkpoint. It was a token gesture on my part, partly to see if she would allow me to kiss her. She pulled away as I moved in for the kiss and confirmed what I had been thinking. Instead, she said one short sentence. "I saw the bottle of lube, Frank." I stood there, dumbfounded. My silence told her all she needed to hear. She didn't say anything else as she went through security and once she cleared it she went to her gate without so much as a backward glance. I ...
