TO THE READERS: This story is a little slow at first, but the good stuff picks up later on when Jeff and Iris discuss the second movie at her grandfather's house. Although this is a fictional story, this one goes out to anyone who wants to be a film critic. Who doesn't want to be like the late Gene Siskel or Roger Ebert? As a person in my mid-twenties who is in his second year of grad school pursuing a master's degree in communication, I find time to go to movies. But I don't just go for kicks or becuase I'm a big movie guru, but what I really want to do is become a famed film critic- like Gene Siskel or Roger Ebert. But all through my years in college and working as an intern at a local radio station in the area, I never really had much time for a date. Between working days and taking evening classes, I'm lucky to even have half of a life. But then one night at the movie theater, that would ALL change. I decided to attend a Friday night opening of a film that w@ould soon be very popular and well known, when I happen to find an empty seat next to an older, mature blond woman. She couldn't've no more than 10 years older than me. The theater was packed, so I asked her politly & with caution, "Excuse me mam'm, but is the empty seat taken?" "No it isn't sir," she responded in a soft, but in a very firmly voice. "You can sit next to me if you'd like." "Thank you," I said. Then she said, "You're welcome sir. By the way, my name is Iris." "Nice to meet you Iris," I said. Then I ...
added, "My name is Jeff." "Nice to meet you Jeff," she said. Then I noticed that she pulled out a notebook with a pen, so I followed her lead by doing the same thing. When she noticed what I was doing, she asked, "Are you a film critic like me?" "No, but I want to be one," I said. Then she said, "Well, I happened to be a professional film and TV critic for the regional eccentric newspaper." "Oh, really?" I said. Then I asked, "So how long have you've been in this business?" "Well," she said, "I've been doing this for about ten years now. Got a bachelor in journalism and a master's in communication." "No kidding?" I said. "Basically, I'm doing the same thing that you did. And this is what I want to do." "Is coming here to the movie theater every week your thing Jeff?" Iris asked. Then I replied, "Yes, I've been coming here almost every week now for the last eighteen months, except during holidays of course." "Well," she said, "it's a start. But you can build on this." Then she comes up with an idea, "What do you say we take notes together during the movie, then we'll go get a late, quick bite afterwards to discuss it. Sound good?" "Sure, why not?" I responded. Then she said, "Then it's a deal." So about a couple of minutes later, the movie starts. It happened an action flick, with a few big-name actors & actresses. The movie ran no more than two hours and ten minutes. Everyone(including Iris & myself), enjoyed the film. It was probably one of the best action films that both of us ...
