    path that would eventually lead me to being used in a cheap motel by 4 teenagers. I guess if I had to choose a starting point it would have to be the summer that I turned 12. That was the Summer that the carnival came to town and when it left my Mother left with it. Dad did a pretty good job at first but when the lumber mill in town closed he and about half of the town was out of work. Jobs in the area were beyond scarce and the only decent job he could get was as a long haul truck driver. I was 13 by then and mature enough that he felt comfortable leaving me home alone while he was out for weeks, sometimes months at a time. He would send money for groceries, rent and any other bills and then he sent The Letter. It was the first day of Summer vacation from school and I had just turned 14. I still remember the day it arrived because it felt a lot thicker than usual. The envelope had a couple thousand dollars and a note. I’ll spare you the details and just say that he said that things were getting too hard for him and that he decided that I would be better off being raised by someone that could care for me the way I needed. I was shaking with fear as I read that note. Not because I was alone, I had been for a while now. No my fear was that I would end up in the foster system. It was widely known that the system in the area was a nightmare. We lived in such a small town that CPS was almost nonexistent. I would end up using the cash he sent to bankroll me until I could figure ...
    out what to do….and I would have some fun until then. I made it through the entire summer before I was completely broke. Rent was way past overdue and the landlord was calling every day until the phone was disconnected. He would come by the house and I would hide until he left. Inevitably though he caught me by surprise. I was expecting a boy I was seeing so when I opened the door I was shocked to see him. Of course he wanted his rent money and of course I didn’t have it. I finally broke down and told him everything. I told him about how daddy wasn’t coming back and that I had no place to go. He mentioned the foster care system and I cried like I never had in my life and he knew why. “I cannot let you stay here rent free and even if I could it looks like you’re a short throw away from starving. I think you should get your things together and I’ll drive you to the Sheriff’s office and they can take it from there.” I cried and I protested and I begged but eventually I gave in and 10 minutes later I had a bag packed with everything I owned and I was in Mr. Piedmont’s car headed towards town. He was silent as he drove. He got into town, then to the Sheriff’s office and then he kept on going until we passed through the opposite side of our little town. He finally pulled into the parking lot of a small little motel. I looked up at him with no doubt a scared look.
