promoters. There were likely fifteen thousand fans packing the stadium as we prepared for our seven thirty start. Despite the pomp and festivities, the main topic of conversation in our pre-game drills was what had happened last night at the hotel. One of our coaches was doing an eleven p.m. bed check at the hotel, and found Julie, the girl from the party, sandwiched in between Keith and one of our pitchers, Tommy – one in the back door, the other in the front. My parents even came to the game, as this was a once in a lifetime opportunity to play in the tournament. Well, maybe twice, if we could repeat in my upcoming twenty year old season. We drew Buffalo for the opening night game, which moved quickly through the early innings, as it entered the seventh in a 2-2 tie. We put a couple runners on base, then broke it open with back-to-back homeruns, leading to a 7-2 victory. Tuesday’s game was against Lansing, who had also won their game on Monday. The large crowd remained, but with much less ceremony. I have to admit I suffered a flood of emotion, and had to work to keep my anxieties at bay. It was one thing to be sitting on the bench, but I was on the verge of actually pitching in front of this crowd. Our starter Tommy walked two of the first three batters, and now it was my turn to stand out there on the pitchers mound. Playing in our own league, I knew most everyone I pitched to, and had a measure of their strengths and weakness, and how good they were overall. These guys were just total strangers. Their names meant nothing. We only knew what defensive position they played, what spot they hit in the batting order, and whether they batted right or left. Oh, and for Lansing, nearly all of them played for the Michigan State, who had made the semi-finals of the College World Series just two months earlier. As I finished my warm-up throws, waiting for the next batter, I could see the major league scouts in the seats outside the press box, with their note books and radar guns. Nothing to make me nervous. Fortunately, I got a pop up and a ground out and escaped the inning still trailing by only two runs. In the seventh, Lansing got a single and a walk, but again no runs. Then a ...
