the short drive to one of his Hotel-Restaurants, she kept Chuck at play with talk about Donovan’s in such a way that he was forced to keep his commercial distance. She had already let him know that she was interested and available, now he was going to have to work to win the prize. In spite of the snow, getting across town went relatively smooth. There was almost nobody out on the road. As they drove under the Interstate, however, the flashing emergency lights spanned a considerable distance and the siren howls were coming from every direction. It would be on the front page tomorrow for sure. Then, even Chuck who never seemed to demonstrate any form of dismay showed a little relief when they pulled up under the portico entrance to the Hotel. The last thing Karla had on her mind was food. She ordered a little shrimp to nibble on, as she said she would. It offered her the greatest range of possibility to use her hands and her lips, and she did so with tremendous skill and sensuality. Through the veil of the alcohol, she still remembered the thought she had earlier that morning about the ‘ master in the kitchen, as the genius of chicanery’ . She would use her talent to manipulate food even as she ate it. In fact, she was now the dish. Earlier the notion had left her depressed. Now she started to feel downright evil. It was exhilarating and she liked it. Chuck was getting harder and harder to read. She could only guess where he was at. She was doing her best to ...
