Alice breathed slowly. Her eyes flickered as if she was trying to remember a chain of event. Her wheels turned as she tried to find that previously overlooked detail which she had just learned I had found. Her eyes met mine and I opened my mouth. “I have to make a phone call.” “Right now? You have to tell me what you know!” “There may be no time to waste,” I said hurriedly. “Get dresses and wait here!” I turned and quickly went into the office, where I picked up the gun. I had to be very careful indeed now. I ran down the stairs and out onto the streets. I walked as fast as I could – heading to the only place I knew I could make a phone call for free at this hour. I couldn't run to Newcomb's hotel. People would assume I was a criminal or another kind of trouble, so I walked as speedily as I could. I felt bad for leaving Alice in the dark, but so many thoughts went through my head and I knew I'd have more time to explain later as soon as the call had been made. I kept looking over my shoulder as I walked. The murderer knew what I looked like. Jane and I were followed that day I saw my office for the first time. The brick. The letter. I knew now who that came from. I blushed for a moment as I recalled what I had been doing when it went through the window. Jane had to be worried about me. As I walked towards the entrance of the hotel I thought about her. I felt I had betrayed her. She was not my girl, but there was something which gave me the feeling that she'd like to be. You ...

In her stead was a a young man with freckles and and a brunette with some oriental pin in her hair. I held up my room key to signal to the guy that I was a resident. As I walked towards the telephone, I heard the familiar sound of heels on the stairs. “Mr. Wakefield!” cried Jane and walked towards as if she was going to crush me beneath her feet. “Jane, there's something I have to do. It's important.” “You left without a word,” she whispered and eyed the pair at the desk. “Jane, I'll explain it soon, I swear! Just give me a minute! I need to make a phone call.” Jane sat down in a nearby armchair and eyed me discontentedly. I called Scotland Yard and asked to speak the inspector Rockford. At first they would not get him on the phone, but they appeared to change their mind when I said I had an important lead. “Mr. Wakefield? Do you know what time it is?” “Yes, sir! There's no time to waste! Meet me at the crime scene. I know how to find the murderer and I need your help. I can't say anymore over the phone, there are people nearby.” “Very well, Mr. Wakefield,” the inspector replied. Just as I hung up, I felt Jane's arms around my shoulders. She turned me around and hugged me more conventionally. “I missed you.” “Jane... I...” “You're not going to do anything dangerous are you?” “No, don't worry! I'll be fine!” “Are you going all alone?” “No, I need ...
