My travel plans had been totally messed up. Weather was to blame. A huge pattern of thunderstorms sweeping up the East Coast had screwed up more than a hundred flights, including mine. As a consequence I got into Boston about five hours later than I'd planned on. I was tired, irritable and, well, generally quite unhappy about life. The cab ride to my downtown hotel was uneventful but the clerk at the reception desk was, to be kind, probably not the most experienced employee the hotel had on staff. She probably wouldn't have upset me if the circumstances were different - young, short blonde hair, lovely blue eyes, slender, as she typed away at her computer I noticed she had very graceful fingers - but, well, I was not in a good mood and she was failing - God knows why - to find any computer evidence of my reservation. Once my flight was cancelled - many hours earlier - I'd called to confirm my reservation. I had a confirmation number handy. But, despite my unpleasant mood - or perhaps because of it - I decided to not just produce that information. I felt a need to, I don't know, make her feel some stress. She spent about ten minutes fumbling away at the computer, apologizing, assuring me that, "It'll be just a minute or two more," and I rather enjoyed watching her discomfort. Check in proceeded apace, I was given a plastic room 'key' and all was well. She apologized repeatedly. I assured her it was all okay and I took the elevator to my room. I got into the room, quickly unpacked, put away my clothes and toiletries and decided that I needed a good stiff drink. Maybe more than one. Back to the lobby, to my new girlfriend. I told her the truth - I was not familiar with Boston, I had no desire to get into a cab or walk very far. I was not up for sight seeing, I'd had a rough day and I needed a strong drink. She was clearly in her young twenties. I assumed she had little real knowledge what sort of place an older fellow like me would be interested in but...I didn't care. I figured I could find my own gin mill if need be, I just wanted to have a more pleasant exchange with her. Frankly, I should have apologized to her, instead I just stared at her as she rattled off the names of a few bars within walking distance. I didn't really hear anything she said, I just listened to her sweet voice. After a minute or two we were just smiling at each other. "Why don't you try Armistice?" she said, breaking the silence. "Okay. Where is it?" I said. "Take a left out the door, walk three blocks, opposite side of the street. Hard to miss," she smiled. "My name's James.Thank you for your help. Shall I tell them you sent me?" "Sure!" She ...
