My sister, Jen, has a good friend named Brenda and every now and then I get to see Brenda and her husband, Steve, who live very close to me in my neighborhood. Both Brenda and Steve are good folks and casual family acquaintances. Since we live in the same community, we often run into each other at community events. Steve is a very likable guy, and is the type of fellow that will give a hug to anyone and everyone. The first time I met him and his wife, they both seemed to take a liking to my entire family. My daughters both attended the same high school as their teenage son, my youngest being a year older than their son. I have told Madelyn she should try and get with Brenda and Steve’s son, since he is a handsome guy and very likable, like his dad. But Madelyn is my “wild child” and is more interested in flirting with the older guys, than someone her own age. I have always had a secret crush on Steve but kept it to myself. He is a handsome, six foot four, well built middle-aged man with sterling features, and a very successful business executive. That night, lying in my bed, I felt pretty stupid for not being friendlier and not capitalizing on an opportunity to be more engaging. I sent Steve a back channel message on social media and apologized for not being my usual self earlier in the day. He responded back, to my surprise and glee, that he understood, but that I’d have to make it up to him over a coffee one day. As I looked at his message, I wondered why a happily married man would offer to take a single mother like myself out for coffee. I dialed my sister to catch up on a few things, and used the call as a cover the casually mention I had run into Steve, since I knew my sister and Steve’s wife were very good friends. Janet knew I was always on the prowl, but she had no idea that I had a secret crush on Steve. Still, somehow, she always knew when I might be heading down the wrong path. So I asked about Brenda and how she was doing in her new business endeavor. Brenda and Jen had gone to school together, years before. Jen told me Brenda was very happy with her new business opportunities. Nervously, I typed out a delayed response to Steve’s offer for coffee. “Name the place and time,” I replied. A few seconds later, Steve ...
