the things we want to know about. Look, we’ll sort this all out Tuesday, Drew. And I promise you that it will work fine. Trust me.” “Trust you? Sure,” he said with a touch of sarcasm. “I’ll trust you.” “Sarcasm doesn’t become you, darling.” “I’m sorry. Okay,” he said. “I’ll trust you.” “See? Trust is an element of love, isn’t it? So, you’ve made another step in the right direction.” “Just let me ask you this,” he said, ignoring her contention. “Is Micah all right with all of this?” “I had the grain of an idea. Micah added the kernel. So, yes. Micah is with me. Do you want to hear it from him?” “No,” Drew sighed again. “I believe you.” “More progress!” she laughed. “You believe me, you trust me, and you don’t hate me. I’d say you’re damned near in love with me.” “Is that your objective, Melissa? To try to make me love you?” “Mmmm, could be. I know you’ve got a thing for married women. I’m married, so…” “How did you know that?” There was a pause, and then they both said it at the same time. “Cheryl.” “Well, usually my attraction is to married women whose husbands ignore them,” he said. “Certainly not the case with you.” “You’re right. Mine’s very attentive and engaged.” “So, there you go.” “Doesn’t make any difference to me.” “What does that mean?” Drew asked. “My attraction to you doesn’t have anything to do with Micah.” “It doesn’t?” “No. Look, we can talk about this next week, can’t we?” “I suppose we can.” “Let’s plan on it.” “All right.” “So, we’ll see you on Tuesday.” ...

He remembered the somewhat strange call he’d received from Cheryl while on the island. This call would rank right up with that one for weirdness, he decided. With a deep sigh, he took a sip from his coffee and grimaced. It had gone cold. He set the cup aside and logged onto his email. There was nothing in the inbox from Cheryl. He clicked the icon to create a new message and began to type. “They’re coming here?” Cheryl’s voice was excited. “Where are you calling from?” Drew asked, alarmed. “In a café near home. Don’t worry. Micah and Melissa are coming here? You said that in your email.” “I was afraid you were calling from home. That would be dangerous.” “I’m not. Tell me!” she demanded. “Yes,” he replied. “They’re coming here.” “On Tuesday?” “That’s what she said.” “That’s wonderful!” she gushed. “And they’re staying at our apartment?” “They refused the idea of any other arrangement.” “You don’t sound delighted, Drew.” “It’s an awfully small apartment. I guess I’ll be sleeping on the couch. And I’m going to have to feed them, you know.” “Oh, stop. You will not. I’ll bet you don’t.” “Those sorts of details apparently didn’t occur to them.” “Drew, will you just relax? I know it will work out. Did you tell her what I said, about, ...
