I could, I padded over to the bathroom to pee and clean my teeth. Throwing on my dirty tee from yesterday, I went to the little kitchenette to put on a brew of coffee and pack a few essentials for the hike – snake bite kit, trail mix, energy bars, water, cap, sun block and a Drimac each. The weather is known to change unpredictably in the mountains, so I had a regular basic survival kit if ever I went hiking. As soon as the coffee was done I poured a cup for Missy, went over to her and kissed her tenderly. “Wakey, wakey, baby girl. Jo and Heather will be here in a bit. I just heard Tom leaving a few minutes ago.” “Oh goody,” replied Missy. “Do you think you can leave me here with Heather and I can just sleep?” I swatted her playfully on the bum as she got out of bed heading to the bathroom. She was barely back, still naked, when Heather was knocking on the door and calling to us, “Behave yourselves now my Mum is with me so get decent and let us in.” Missy giggled as I opened the door to let them in and offer them some coffee. Jo seemed quite unfazed by Missy’s semi naked state but it wasn’t long before we were loading the day packs into my old SUV and getting ready to move out. His shoulders reached almost to my hip but he was impeccably behaved so I never had to worry about trying to control such a big fellow. Apart from warning us about the snakes he would also be a deterrent for the baboons that lived on the slopes. I opened the tail gate and Nduna jumped in, immediately putting his head out of the window, his ears flapping in the wind as we drove off. Two hours later and we were in the middle of the steep section which would take us to the final plateau before coming around the bend to The Bathplug. Missy and Heather were ahead with Jo and me following some ten paces behind, all of us sucking frequently on our water bottles. Nduna was running ahead and then turning and waiting for us before running ahead again. Suddenly, I saw him stop dead in his tracks, “Missy, Heather stop,” I shouted. They both stopped dead as I cautiously moved ahead to Nduna. Lying sunning itself in the path on the other side of a rock we would inevitably have had to step over was a young Berg Adder about 45cm long. Young as it was, had it bitten one of us we would have been in serious trouble. Guiding the others we were able to step around snake and move on. I was nevertheless shaken because, without Nduna, the girls would surely have stepped right onto the snake. Around twenty minutes ...
