“Lulu!” my wife exclaimed, undoing her coat before making to hug the woman. “It’s been so long.” Lulu dodged the hug, standing aside to let my wife pass. I stuck close to Tina, saying to Lulu, “I’m not going anywhere, if that’s what you think.” “Oh,” Lulu said, a cruel smile playing at the corners of her mouth, “I especially want you to be here.” This knocked me off my stride. Tina, however, was not put off, standing her ground in the middle of the room. “Lulu,” she said, “what’s all this about?” Lulu suddenly seemed a little put off herself, giving her bottom lip a nibble as she folded her arms. She was wearing black leggings and a frowsy white frock that did her few favours. “You left me!” she blurted out suddenly. “Dear Lulu,” my wife said, in a conciliatory voice. “Things changed after the accident. I changed. You must understand that. You still had the business.” “The business,” Lulu snorted. “Thirty years of my life doing nothing but filming people fucking! Do you think that’s what I wanted to do with my life?” There was an eerie silence, then my wife said, “You should have said. I wouldn’t have stopped you if you wanted out.” Lulu was tapping her foot repeatedly. I thought you’d come back to me!” Then she turned, stamping her foot and muttering, “Stupid, stupid, stupid, stupid!” “I married,” Tina said quietly. “I had an accident and then I married. You know that.” Lulu turned. “Oh,” she said frostily, “of course I know!” She was staring straight at me. It was perfectly obvious that Lulu was unstable, and I had no idea how to behave. Instead of keeping my mouth shut, I shrugged and said, “These things happen. People meet, fall in love. People change.” “You! You!” Lulu exclaimed, stabbing her finger in my direction, “You stole Tina from me!” “Dear Lulu,” my wife tried. “Nobody stole any…” “I loved you!” Lulu wailed, turning to my wife. “I loved you so much!” The words began to tumble out of her. “Oh I knew you didn’t love me; not like that. But as long as we had the business together, at least I got to be with you! I got to be with you even though my role was to film you shagging the world and his uncle! Then he turned up!” Once again she pointed at me. “You left me! You betrayed me!” “I’m sorry,” my wife said softly. “If I’d known...” “Sorry!” Lulu shouted. “Sorry!” I tried again. “Please, just tell us what you want?” This seemed to calm Lulu down a bit. “What I want?” she said. Then the cruel smile returned. “I want Tina back. Oh, not all the time, not like before. What about once a month?” It was a rhetorical question. I’d reached ...
