1. The Perks of Military Command - Part III

    Being in charge of an Army training cadre has it perks. As a company commander, I could pretty much get anything I wanted. The most rewarding aspect, was seeing individuals working together, to form a team and accomplishing things as a group, things they could never accomplish as an individual. Getting through basic training is no easy task. Drill instructors are taught to break a person down, and then to rebuild them they way the Army wants them to be. This is no easy task and my task, as a company commander, was to insure the goal of teamwork was realized at every opportunity. Call me an opportunist if you want, but my job was to prepare soldiers for combat. In order to be successful, every solder has to have the other soldier’s back. Sometimes this requires a bit of selfless sacrifice. “Self-less sacrifice for the good of the team” was our company motto. Recruits Lisa Lovejoy and Jenna Thompson, were perfect recruits, except like every recruit, they had basic human needs that often clashed with their training objectives. After these two “Privates” were caught sleeping in the same bunk, I had to issue appropriate punishments to each. The Army has a “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell" policy, and I made sure that I followed that policy explicitly. I had both recruits in my office, standing at "attention".     good future for both ladies in the Army. Both recruits had been trained to follow the lawful orders of those appointed over them. As the company commander, I had the ability to order each of them to do anything and everything, within reason and within the law. I could not coerce, intimidate or imply they should do anything that would violate military law or codes of conduct established by the military. I also had the power to discipline them if they did something wrong. I had to use my powers judiciously and prudently. As each recruit stood at attention in my office, shortly after our Saturday morning PT run, I asked them if they had learned a lesson regarding standards of conduct and what was expected of them as recruits. “Sir! Yes Sir!” they responded in unison. The rest of their platoon had the day off, but both Private Thompson and Private Lovejoy were still on barracks restrictions, which meant they couldn’t leave the barracks. Private Thomson smiled as I approached where they stood, waiting for me. “Is there something funny?” I asked. “Sir, no sir,” she responded. “So why the silly grin?” I inquired. “Sir, I don’t know, sir,” she responded. Both recruits had wet spots under the arm pits of their army green t-shirts, having just completed a two-mile run. “You ladies need to hit the showers,” I remarked.
