Bell said, “Cheers to that!” Penny smacked him in the shoulder. As they got to Penny and Bell's car, Haden said, “Hey, let's take a walk down Bourbon Street. I'm not quite ready to go home yet.” Everyone looked around at each other. Penny made a face. “I don't know. I think I'm kind of beat. And if I'm tired then Bell is a zombie. Right, zombie?” She turned to Bell. “Brains!” Bell said unenthusiastically. Haden turned to Andrew. “How about you, my handsome husband? Take your lady for a walk?” “Sure.” He smiled as he said it, but Haden heard a hesitancy there. They said their goodbyes to Penny and Bell and then treked down to the lively end of Bourbon Street. First, they passed through the residential neighborhoods and then into the gay section. Andrew laughed, “Man, there is nothing like a gay bar to make you feel insecure about your abs.” Men in skimpy outfits flitted by them, heading into bars on both sides of the streets that were pumping out loud club music. Haden and her husband drifted through the happily d***k crowd into the straight section of the famous street. As they passed by a balcony, Haden heard, “Hey blondie! Let's see them tittays!” Andrew looked up as well. There were four young men up on the balcony. Three of them wore shirts that said “LSU” on them. Each of them had a beer in one hand and multiple strings of beads in the other. “I've got a string of ...
beads here if you flash them tits!” Andrew called up in a calm, firm voice, “Not going to happen guys. Sorry.” Another one of them called back, “Aww dad! Come on! Let your daughter come out and play doctor with us! We'll treat her right, promise! We'll have her back by midnight, tomorrow!” Haden yanked Andrew's arm as he began to come to a stop. “No, honey. Please. Let's just keep going. Ignore it. It's no big deal.” She gently pulled on his arm again and they resumed walking. Andrew went silent. Another one of the boys called out, “Hey beautiful, when you get tired of grandpa, come find me. I got what you need!” They walked another block and then Haden steered them into a placed called the Cat's Meow. It was a karaoke place and even at 1am, it was hopping. They sidled up to the bar. Haden said to the bartender, “Give us whatever locals like to drink here.” The bartender came back with two tall, red, frozen drink concoctions. “What are these?” “Hurricanes. f******n dollars.” Haden gave him a twenty and then left a one dollar tip. The drinks were cold and sweet. When Haden had finished hers, she said, “Let's keep walking. I'm going to grab another of these and take it to go.” She purchased another hurricane and they resumed their walk. Haden noticed that after the drink, Andrew had gotten even more quiet and withdrawn. She thought about asking him to talk about it but decided that in the middle of Bourbon Street was a bad idea. As they passed another business though, inspiration ...
