“Babes, wake up, you’re going to be late.” It was Jason. He stood above Sarah looking down at her with loving eyes. Sarah sat up, yawned, and looked at the time. Half past nine. Her shift at the store started in forty-five minutes. “Shit! Alright, I’m up.” Another yawn. “What on earth are you doing down here?” he asked. Sarah had never thought about this; she had to think fast. Theo was in the kitchen. She saw him go to say something, but then he caught himself and remained quiet. “Couldn’t sleep, it was seriously hot upstairs last night,” she saw Theo suppress a giggle, “I came down to have a smoke, must have dozed off; sorry babes.” She waited. For a second it looked as though Jason was going to question it. When he didn’t, relief swept over her, and Theo too by the looks of it. “Fair enough, you’d best get sorted. Don’t need you losing that job,” in a quieter tone, he added “and cover yourself more next time you sneak off downstairs in the middle of the night.” With a nod, Sarah went to get dressed, leaving the lads alone. Something that worried her, Theo had never been good under pressure; if Jason said the wrong thing, Theo might cave. Twenty minutes later and Sarah was ready to head out the door. It would take about half an hour to walk to work. She was screwed this time; Barry, her boss, had already taken a disliking to her. In fact, she only got the job because Jenna, her best friend, had put in a good word. “I’m off, I’ll see you tonight babes.” she called, as she ...
was about to head out the door. “I’m on nights, won’t be home ‘till gone twelve.” Jason shouted back, but she was already gone at a half-run, half-walk down the street. The long walk gave her plenty of time to reflect on the previous night. What did she really know about Theo? He’d been with them a couple years now; it was only supposed to be a month or two, after Diana had kicked him out. But he fit in well and it kind of worked to have him around. He and Jason had known each other for over a decade. He was probably the worst person I could have slept with, s he thought. They were close, real close. It was the ultimate betrayal. Lost deep in thought, she took a wrong turn and had to double back on herself, costing precious time. If she lost another job, she would be in serious trouble. Sarah had never been great at keeping jobs. It was down to her hatred of being told what to do; it was just something she had a serious issue with - the only reason she’d kept this one so long was that Jenna had put herself on the line to get her the job. No matter how much she hated being told what to do, she couldn’t put Jenna at risk, for no other reason than that she was a stubborn cow. She turned down the forest trail that the store sat perched aside. The vibrant greens of the willow trees overhead held a remarkable beauty, and the ground beneath her feet was soft and moist as a result of the glistening river to her left. She could just make out the shadows of the fish, darting through the ...
