1. Punk Rock Show

    It was loud, it was hot, and it was sweaty. Punk rock at its finest. I was playing the edge of the mosh pit, diving in and slamming with the hardcore dancers, then jumping out before things got too nasty. There was in particular one group of guys, huge guys, the biggest one must have been six foot six and 300 pounds. All of them had shaved their heads bald. Big bald skinhead punkers. They were brutal; slamming into them was like hitting a brick wall, and then you'd get shoved back and pinballed between them. But I'm a big guy, 6' 3" myself and 200+ so I could hold my own against them, at least for a while, and I was having a grand old time. At one particularly sweaty moment when I ducked out of the pit for a breather, I noticed a gaggle of girls standing at the edge. They attracted my attention because it isn't common to see a girl in the pit, not at a show like this. It's a dangerous place for a big guy like me, let alone a lady. But even more interesting was that these girls looked to be teens to me. It's not all that uncommon for p*****ns to come to these all-ages shows (although officially you're supposed to be thirteen). But seeing girls this young down in the mosh pit is unheard of, and for good reason. Right after they caught my attention I saw two of the girls laughing heartily as they playfully shoved a third one into the fray. This caught my attention immediately because the girl was a tiny thing, couldn't have been five feet tall, and skinny as a rail. And ...
    they'd shoved her, unintentionally, right into that group of skinheads. I sprang into action. The girl was going to be crushed to death if I didn't get in there and play her blocker. She bounced into one of the huge skinheads, who was either too d***k to notice her, or just didn't give a shit, and she ricocheted off of him. I saw a look of terror on her face. I managed to get there just in time to stand between her and the next skinhead. He shoved hard into me, just as oblivious as his buddy to what was going on, but I anchored my feet and took the blow and protected the girl. I'd bought her about a half-second of time and she took advantage of it to dive back out of the fray. I jumped out after her. The way the crowd was surging now, we were on the opposite side of the floor from her group of friends; I looked back at them and could see them giggling like nothing had happened at all. I felt a hand on my arm, and I turned, and the girl yelled something. I couldn't hear her at all but I could see her lips moving. "Huh?" I yelled, leaning down. She put her mouth right against my ear. "Thanks!" she shouted. "Hey, no problem!" I yelled back in her ear. The mosh pit was surging hard now, moving like an a****l, pulsing forward and backward, side to side, there must have been two hundred people in there now and we were shoved brutally backwards. I was getting exhausted pushing the crowd back and this was clearly no place for a girl like her. "Com'on!" I shouted, grabbing her hand and ...
