1. Preparing Erica for the Swim Team

    When Erica’s was 10, her family moved from Philadelphia to the tony suburb of Princeton, New Jersey. Her father had gotten a new job as an executive at a pharmaceutical company, which came with more responsibility, but also a significant pay raise. It would allow her Mom to cut back on her work hours, which she desperately wanted. Erica’s Mom suffered from chronic back pain, and working was difficult. Both kids’ practices were held in the afternoon, after school, which was when their Mom had her therapy appointments to help her back, so it worked out well. Mom would be out when the kids were out, and they would all be home for dinner together. Some nights, their Dad got home in time for dinner, but the new job was demanding. He made it a point of making it home two nights per week, but it was tough to commit to much more, and the family understood. On one particular Tuesday, after the kids left for school, their Mom left them a note on the refrigerator. She had scheduled a therapy appointment for her back from 5-7 p.m., and since their Dad would not be home until later, they would have to find something for dinner for themselves. They were independent kids, and besides they loved their Mom and wanted her to feel better. Earlier that day at school, announcements were made about who had made the sports teams.
