1. Taylor makes it work

    One of them, she was slowly realizing, on of them liked her. Really liked her. His named was Darren. He was a junior department head, just a small wheel in a big machine. She'd noticed that first night that he seemed to hang on her every word. But it didn't click until that night, when they were all together in the bar. That was an interesting story, in itself. Taylor had her license, but shit, she still looked like a ten-year old girl. The bartender finally gave up running her out when all the people with her told him her story, as she just sat there and grinned. He finally gave her a whiskey that was ninety percent water, like she asked. They all had a good time, sitting and around and drinking and talking. At some point she'd stood, and walked over to the large glass wall that looked out on the beach. She heard someone behind her and turned. It was Darren. They made small talk for a while, and he finally said, "I think I'm going for a walk on the beach. Wanna come?" She didn't really, she didn't want to leave the fun of the party, but she thought, what the hell. She followed him out, and down the boardwalk. They took off their shoes, and walked along the beach and let the waves wet their feet and ankles. They talked, and she told him more about her life, a little more private than the stuff she'd told the crowd. She felt like he was sympathetic to her situation, and understanding.     co-worker, or if he'd intended on starting something a little more involved. They walked for what felt like miles, and finally turned around. On the way back he gently took her upper arm in his as they walked, and finally she thought, shit. She shook her arm free of his, surprising him, and then placed her little hand inside his big one. He squeezed it, and they held hands back to the motel. The party had broken up, so he walked her to her room, and said goodnight. She was rooming with a girl named Denise. They had known each other for several years, not really close, but just two people who happened to work at the same place. As Taylor got ready for bed, she make small talk, and then Denise surprised her. "I know somebody that likes you," the other girl said, in a sing-song voice. Taylor snorted. "Who," she asked. "You did not hear this from me," Denise said, "But Darren Wilbarton from accounts is mad about you." "Darren? Shit. Me an' him just walked down the beach. That's where I was." "See? It's happenin', girl. Let it happen." "Shit." Taylor was bemused. Well, they had one more night here. What will happen will happen, she thought. She sat up late, and talked to Denise at length. Once again, all her stories about her life, people seemed to love to hear her tales. She figured it made them glad they were normal.
