the last time you saw her?” “A year ago. I was passing through town. I was really sick and in deep trouble and she helped me. She saved my life actually.” “And she brought you to this here apartment, didn’t she?” “Yes ma’am.” “This was her apartment you know,” the old woman said softly. “I moved in not long after the poor baby was killed. Been over twenty years now.” “Yes I read her memorial plague in town," Nancy said. "You know some folks say that they've seen her around since she passed on," the woman interjected out of nowhere. "I don't believe in ghosts," Nancy answered. "You don't? Then how about angels?” The old woman asked. “Because that’s who took care of you last year honey. An angel.” "Thank you for your time," Nancy said. "You have a blessed day sweetie," The woman said and closed the door as Nancy turned and went back down the stairs. As she climbed back into her Corvette and started the engine, tears streamed down Nancy's cheeks and a beautiful smile lit up her face as she gazed up into the afternoon sun. "Yes ma'am! That is exactly who she was," Nancy whispered and drove out of the parking lot. The sky quickly turned very dark and threatening as Nancy cruised south heading back to Houston. About ten miles out of Raymond, the sky opened up and a torrential downpour ensued. The roadway was unusually barren and very lightly traveled for a Sunday afternoon. It was then that Nancy spotted a person on the shoulder about a ...
quarter of a mile ahead. As she approached, Nancy saw that it was a haggard-looking woman desperately trying to flag down a ride. The poor thing was drenched to the bone. Immediately Nancy's heart filled with pity for she remembered the sensation all too well. Suddenly, she heard Angela’s gentle voice whisper into her ear. Just remember me my love. Just remember me. And one day, do for another lost and aching soul as I did for you. Without hesitation, Nancy pulled over onto the shoulder and rolled down the passenger window to address the woman standing on the shoulder of the highway. “Can I give you a lift honey,” Nancy asked the woman. "Oh thank you so much," she replied gratefully. “My pleasure,” Nancy told her. “Hop in.” As the woman got in, Nancy reached behind the passenger seat and produced a dry towel and handed it to her seemingly despondent passenger. "Oh thank you so much," the woman said as she took the towel. The woman was rail thin, gawky and looked so very frail and tired. Her dirty reddish - auburn hair was soaked to the scalp and her skeletal hands were shivering as her teeth chattered. Nancy estimated the woman to be close to her age or perhaps a tad older for her face was quite warn. Yet Nancy felt it looked vaguely familiar. "So, where you headed?" Nancy asked. "Anywhere but here. Would it be all right if I just rode along for a while?" She asked. "No problem,” Nancy told her. “I’m Nancy by the way. "Hi Nancy. I’m Angela."
