    The head of the art school was very excited when he discovered I’d been carpenter before Art College. A big name architect in the sixties, he had no time for anyone generally, but suddenly became my best pal. He needed some repair work done on the modernist masterpiece he both designed and lived in and offered me a day’s work repairing a window. With all the humility of an architect, he didn’t see this as me doing him a favour either, but rather “a great opportunity to get hands on with a piece of architectural history.” I couldn’t say no, and he offered me use of his pool during the hot summer, so I agreed. It was only when I turned up for the recce that I remembered Pearl, a fine-artist in Sara’s year, who just happened to be the professor’s daughter. Sara said the girl had a crush on me but, since the “Fluffer” gossip, that had become obvious. She had taken to actually stalking me. Standing in the studio and staring doe-eyed or sitting next to me in the quad, radiating a feverish longing. Pearl was gorgeous in a shaggy-pink-haired-punk-doll way. A huge forehead and massive eyes – permanently outlined in thick black make-up – set in a heart shaped face with a pert little mouth. However, she slightly gave me the creeps. It seems terrible to say this now, but she just emanated bad news. Sara agreed, warning me Pearl was really only out to upset her Dad. The professor showed me round his, admittedly, outstanding house and I made a list of materials he would need to fix it. ...
    Meanwhile, I tried my utmost to ignore Pearl, who was lying by the pool sunbathing in a tiny white bikini. I cursed my thick head for taking this job on as she waved breezily and her Dad dragged me over to ‘introduce’ us. “You know Pearl, I suppose. She’s at the college. Right give me that list, I’ll go and get what you need. Why don’t you test the pool? I won’t be long.” I suggested I help him at the builder’s merchants but he wasn’t having any of it, heading off and leaving me alone with the scary girl. The garden was huge, surrounded by a small forest of tall trees and completely private. With a twist of anxiety I realised we really were utterly alone together. I decided to grow some balls and deal with it. I thought, I’ll mind my own business, do some lengths, do my prep, go home . Pearl pointed to a little building at the head of the pool. “You can change in the pool house, if you like?” she said. Heartened by her calm straightforwardness, I wondered if it might be ok after all. I stripped and put on my trunks in the tasteful little building, full of minimalist furniture and perfectly proportioned space. However, as I unlocked the door to return to the pool I heard a girlish squeal and slid it open to find Pearl quickly settling on a lounger right outside. She bit her lips to hide a smile. I bit mine to stop my heart leaping out my mouth. She lay on her front with an unfastened bikini top and seemed ‘disinterested’ in me as I padded self-consciously by her toward the water. ...
