    I have many happy memories of my parents during my early childhood, and only realized when I was thirteen years old and in middle school, that my family was very dysfunctional. My parents both worked at blue collar jobs, which they had a hard time keeping due to their being alcoholics. They were usually either not home, of if they were they were drunk and verbally, and sometimes even physically abusive to me. Kids in middle school are old enough to start becoming aware of the social status of their parents, through interactions at school functions. So I didn’t have any really close friends, and I felt isolated and alone most of the time. However, things changed dramatically for the better for me when I entered high school. My name is Susie, and I turned fourteen years old during the summer before I began my freshman year of high school. I didn’t recognize her, and waved her over to sit with me. We started talking and soon realized that we had a lot in common, and our personalities were very compatible. Over the next several weeks we became the best of friends, and I shared with her my unfortunate family circumstances. I was envious when she told me how close her family is and how they did so much together. We lived only about one mile from one another, and she was soon inviting me over to her home. Her family was very accepting and friendly with me, and they made me feel like part of the family.
