was that about?” she asked. “I’m not sure. He just told me to tell the waiter, then take a walk down by the lake after dinner. He seemed pretty sure we’d enjoy it,” I shrugged. Riley glanced over her shoulder at the older couple. “I’m sure we will,” she smiled, and returned her attention to her food. As the old couple passed our table on their way out, he gave me a sly thumbs up and winked. The wife stopped putting her hand on Riley’s shoulder. “It was nice to meet you dear. Hope you have a wonderful evening,” she said, then turned to me, “Trust him. He knows what he’s talking about. At least in this instance he does,” she laughed and followed her husband. “What a nice couple,” Riley said, watching them go. “Yeah,” I nodded, finding the whole situation strange. After clearing our dishes, Klaus set the bill on the table. “Your dessert will waiting up front when you are ready sir,” he explained. I was a little shocked when I saw the bill. It was quite a bit less than I expected. Just below the total, Klaus had written “First Date Discount” and subtracted thirty percent from the total. Enjoy your dessert, you may leave the basket with the valet when you’re done.” The doorman held the door open and bowed as we exited. Just as I began to wonder how we were going to find “the path” there was a small sign with an arrow that read “Lakeside Path”. We followed the arrow and started down a path, it was just wide enough for two people to walk side by side and descended down through the trees and brush. It was a fairly gentle slope and wound around down the hillside finally breaking out of the trees onto the sandy beach. I slipped my free arm around Riley’s waist as we walked and she leaned into me. She looked so beautiful in the filtered moonlight beneath the trees. She put her arm around me. “Thanks Will, that was the best meal I’ve ever had, and it’s so beautiful up here. You’re very romantic,” she said. Nearing the bottom of the path, we heard giggling ahead of us. We rounded a corner and came face to face with the source. It was the old man and his wife, walking arm in arm carrying a basket identical to the one I carried. The wife blushed and giggled when she saw us, and the man smiled broadly. “You kids have fun. Remember what I said,” he chuckled as we passed. “Hopefully as much as you,” Riley giggled, “That’s cute. I hope I’m that frisky when I’m their age.” I looked back at the couple and over at one of the large trees alongside the path. The tree had probably just been a sapling when they took ...
