    sink turned on. Haden smiled at him. A moment later, Mia came out and she and Marc walked back out to the party casually. Haden went inside and closed the door, flushed with mixed emotions. What she'd seen was both arousing and disturbing. It was so hard to get the image of Mia as a young girl of twelve out of her head. To reconcile her with the young woman she'd just seen making out. Even stranger was seeing her make out with a black guy. Part of her recoiled from the thought of kissing a black man, but another part of her brain chastised her for even thinking that way. Sitting on the toilet, holding her wine glass, she said aloud, “Oh god. Was Penny right? Am I a racist? What is wrong with me?” When she went to wipe after peeing, she noticed that there was more moisture there than there should have been. She stared at the toilet paper for a second, trying to decipher what it was that had aroused her. Everything in her experience told her that there was nothing she should have been turned on by. The image of his hand moving up her thigh replayed in her mind. His lips over hers. Haden took a big gulp of wine and headed back out to the party. When she stepped back into the living room, a man said, “Awwwww yeah!” He looked down to Andrew and said, “This must be Haden, am I right?” Andrew nodded.     here was just telling me that his wife was using the restroom and I said to myself, this guy Andrew, he's got style. I'll bet his wife is just dazzling. It's good to be right! You are simply stunning!” He leaned down and kissed her hand. “Andrew my man, you are one lucky motherfucka!” She managed to both blush and stifle a giggle. Darryl was totally over the top. His hair was done in an evenly domed Afro that seemed both modern and dated at the same time. His clothing was no different, a combination of silk and leather that was just a breath away from framing him as a caricature of a pimp. He was like something out of a movie. With Darryl's arrival, the entire tone of the party changed. It wasn't long before the older folks and k**s began to leave. The adults began to drink more, the topics of conversation became more mature. Haden felt a strange combination of comfortable and out of place. On the one hand, Mia and Andrew seemed to be genuinely enjoying themselves and everyone else at the party was friendly beyond anything Haden had experienced in Idaho or Connecticut. At the same time, she became aware that while Lucas had been pleasant to her in a way that made her think he was just playing the role of the polite neighbor she began to suspect that there was more to it than that. He made eye contact a couple of times only to look away quickly. He was never close, but never far either. It reminded her of a a****l stalking prey.
