hesitated. “I was going to say its nine o’clock. Now would be a good time to call her.” and I could hear her lean against the door frame. “She’s probably crawling in bed.” That was not what I expected. It wasn’t an apology, but it was the closest she would ever get, probably. “Ok.” I replied, and listened for her to move. “Thanks.” I called, giving her the closest she would get to accepting it. “You’re welcome.” she said, further away. I looked at my phone and saw that she was right. ‘Nine oh two’ I thought. She was probably sitting on her bed. I opened my contacts and looked at her name. ‘Now is as good of a time as any.’ I said to myself, and pressed the call button. I thought I screwed up. I hadn’t come up with anything to say to her. What if she asked me questions that might decide whether she would go out with me or not? What if I sounded retarded over the phone? I thought, ‘Crap, what if she was already asleep?’ which caused me to drop the phone from my ear on the first ring. I almost hung up but I could hear a voice say, “Hello?” right after the second ring. I cleared my throat and brought the phone back up to my ear. “Um, hi… it’s Jake Blake.” Chapter 11 “Hi Jake.” she replied. “Um, I didn’t know if you’d be awake so I was just going to leave a message.” I said, giving a reason to call. “This is my phone number if you wanted to save it.” “Oh yeah, sure.” she said, and I could hear her rise up into a sitting position. Seconds ticked by and I scrambled for words in ...
my head, “It was getting dark when you left. I wanted to make sure you got home ok.” I said, wiping a sweaty palm off on my sheet. “Awe, that’s sweet.” she cooed, “Daisy has fog lights.” and explained, “She looks like a U.F.O. at night time.” “I bet; some kind of alien invasion.” I pictured, “I should get a set for Jenny.” I thought aloud. Her lazy voice perked up, “Who’s Jenny?” she asked, in the politest way. I laughed at her slyness and explained, “You rode in her today.” “Oh, the jeep.” she remembered, “That’s a good name for her.” I explained the story behind the name and she explained the story behind Daisy’s. Seems her grandfather bought it and drove it all the way back from Carol County. He stopped at a field of daisies to take a leak. He must not have put it in neutral because the tractor followed him into the field. “You can imagine him skipping and a jumping; trying to get that tractor stopped.” she laughed. “But anyway, he saw her sitting there surrounded by daisies and came up with her name right there.” Her accent enthralled me. It sounded so innocent and laid back; I couldn’t help but relax and enjoy her. She went on about the farm and how it supplied so many products to the market. That led to her telling me about her dad. “So dad has to hire a lot of people come harvest time.” she finished. “Sounds like a lot of work to me.” I said in awe. “Yeah, he likes getting his hands dirty.” she reckoned. “Seems like a good, hard-working guy.” I mused. “Too good.” she ...
